SORRY! I know that many folks know this shot, but I did a poll with my extended family and this was by far the most selected shot as my "best of the year," so I submitted it anyway. I actually like this shot much better than my previous DQed blue ribbon, but I felt that the other would get a higher score by the strange conglomerative voting here. I still suspect that that's the case.

I also remembered that a large number of shots from previous year end challenges were also recognizeable by me--so here it is. I suppose I shall suffer the consequences, perhaps, but I suspect that many photographers face this same challenge.

This was hand-held, and after driving for 90 minutes to this amazing place at the north of the Great Salt Lake, I found that my batteries were dead. I had to keep starting up the camera over and over as it turned itself off after each shot (I didn't even have time to turn it off; it did it itself). I knew I could eek about 8-10 shots out of the batteries, which I did.

I'm sure I'll enjoy many of your shots during this challenge. It is always a favorite of mine to vote on and see such amazing work.

I love the part about the batteries - I've been there a few times too...

I really don't have to tell you that this is a superb photograph - the voters already did that by it ending up in 25th place, in a HUGE challenge - that is a statement all on it's own. If a stunning example of a photograph being all about composition AND lighting, well this is, without a doubt, one that should be a benchmark.

Congrats on a great finish David. You choice was perfect.

This is truly a wonderful shot and the fact that your batteries were more or less dead makes it even more special. Well done.

Well done, one of the few places where the old posts haven't almost rotted away. The colors and saturation are perfect!

I love this shot! The colours are striking, the focus is spot on, depth of field is perfect and the poles disappearing into the distance give further depth to the image. And then of course, it's duplicated by the wonderful reflection!

Another cracking shot from this series David. You certainly made the most of the magic hour here, and I expect this will do very nicely with the voters. Very striking and satisfying to behold.

I have only one small nit-pick – I'd love to nudge the camera down a touch just to catch more of the reflections and that horizon is just slightly skewed clockwise. Who cares ultimately though!

It's interesting: "Angle of repose" is a term used by geologists to denote the angle at which the rubble ("scree") lies at the base of a mountain or other geological formation. Differing sizes and/or textures of scree will have different angles of repose, the angle at which they stop rolling downhill and hold their position.

So, to me, the title doesn't seem "right", albeit it sounds very good. Are you familiar with the great Wallace Stegner novel of the same title? Anyway, I doubt more than a couple people would even notice this, and it doesn't affect my vote, this is just a chatty sidebar tot he image. It's a hell of a nice shot :-)

I read this as 'angles of response' - I'm hung-over, so excuse my comprehension. But I like that implication more than your chosen title, actually: a suggestion of two worlds colliding, and of course a suggestion of the encroachment of the seas ...
