Challenge: Best of 2006 (Advanced Editing V*)
Camera: Nikon Coolpix 4500
Location: The Louvre, Paris, France
Date: May 13, 2006
Aperture: f/3
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/22.5
Galleries: Humorous, Traditional Art
Date Uploaded: Jan 7, 2007

Taken at the Louvre in Paris in May 2006 with my Nikon 4500 4MP point & shoot. Loved the expressions of the people watching the Venus.

Wasn't going to enter this year's challenge, since I just got my DSLR in mid-December '06, but this image has received a ton of looks since I added it to my portfolio a few days before the challenge (probably because I posted it in the "Nudes" gallery!), so I thought I would see what the voters might have to say. Thanks for looking.

The image is pretty much the same as the one I posted to my portfolio (but hidden while the challenge was open) ... just straightened it out and gave it a slightly tighter crop in Picasa, then sharpened and resized it in Irfanview.

---
Post-challenge: I truly appreciate all the wonderful comments and votes ... makes me feel good to know some of you out there got what I was trying to do. I didn't expect much, and know this wasn't a technically perfect image (or even close) given that it had to be handheld at 1/22.5 w/my point and shoot, but it truly was my favorite shot from last year. Now if I can only get back to the Louvre with my DSLR!

I've unhidden the original from my portfolio (now named oliM iD senuV in honor of Pug-H's great suggestion!); you can see where I rotated it (which cut off the woman on the left a bit) and tried to sharpen afterwards. I think I like the people in the original file more.

This one of my 10s; to my mind this is an exceptional photograph, and one I shall come back to view again and again. I am very suprised to see that it hasn't ranked higher.

simply incredible. i hope this entry doesn't get lost in the crowd. while it's far from perfect, it is one of my faves. very, very nicely observed.

this is so poignant to me. I've never seen Venus from this side. I've always been one of the gawkers. This belongs in a magazine. 9

Ooh - looks busy! Not sure I like the crowd, though I see what you are trying to achieve.

Image is oversharpened (see the jaggies on the statue's side) and parts are overexposed (shirts of some of the viewers).

A shallow depth of field might have worked well here to keep the focus on the statue and keep the crowd in the background - IMO, you need the impression of a crowd more than the distracting detail.

I believe this was in your portfolio and appealed to me then; it still has a mesmerizing feel; wonderful point of view...the expressions on the people are just fascinating.

What an interesting take on a masterpiece! The photo in engaging - one kinda feels for poor Venus with all those folks staring.

Excellent, because this is the view you don't often see - and so your title might have been "Olim id Senuv".
It's just a shame that the people's faces are ruined by the sharpening process.

too bad that the jpg conversion is so rough. Or is it deliberate?

Is there a guy in the back with a dollar bill? (Only kidding) Great perspective. One of the few art photos I've liked. 8
