Exact middle of the picture. For this I didn't focus and recompose with prior focus locked. All I changed was exposure settings to get good lighting. The contrast of the metal of the Space Needle seems to make it a really good subject for both day and night shooting. I got a couple more angles the other day during light hours, and they came out fairly similiar in sharpness.

Cool. Did you focus on the top, or somewhere in the middle?

Remember, depth of field is a ratio of the distance you are from the object vs the depth provided. This ratio changes at different mm equivalent ratios. I'm not sure if it goes up or down, but this was at maximum telephoto (~105 mm equivalent.) The fStop came from the EXIF data in ACDSee.

I don't think irae's referring to the actual size of the aperture, but the amazing depth of field captured at that setting. It looks more like f8 or smaller to me!

irae-- My Olympus C-700UZ has 2.8. It's not so huge.

Congratulations! One thing, though; are you sure about that aperture setting? That's a pretty huge depth of field for f2.5, even for a digicam.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments! To answere a few questions:
* This was taken with my Canon Powershot G2, not that high end of a camera.
* Yes, it would probably look better with more sky above teh top.
* I think the bottom would have looked better there if I'd have gotten the left side not cut off, or if I'd rotated around slightly to get one of the three pieces of the bottom straight on.

A testament to Canon's fantastic consumer-grade camera technology! And Myk, of course! :)

Where's the haystack? I wonder how many people won't know what this is.

Great!

spot on exposure - superb detail in your <150Kb file - good resizing - got to be a top-end cam?

So sharp it hurts, and very nice color. Did you try any different compositions? They'd be interesting to see.

Good

Like the perspective.

I really like this photo. I love how the circular top of the Needle is centered in the photo. I also love the contrast against the dark sky.
03/27/2002 10:55:00 AM
wow. the lack of noise makes me think this was taken with a fairly high end camera?
03/26/2002 06:48:00 PM
For what it's worth, cropping the bottom of the structure out, leaving the spire only would've looked cool.
03/26/2002 07:52:00 AM
Needs more sky at top, great picture otherwise.
03/26/2002 05:38:00 AM

Great lighting! I really like this one
03/25/2002 12:16:00 AM
really nice and crisp, i would have framed it so the top of the needle wasn't so close to the edge, though!
