In my first year of photography I have learned so much here at DPC.
I have learned that images that speak loudest to me are images that nobody else has, would or will ever be able to take again. Besides me.

I am proud of this shot.

Cheers nick

Do you think you'd be willing to make this available as a print? I'd love to have it in 8x10 then I'd send you a matte to sign so I could properly frame and hang it. Shots like this are why I have a camera. I can only hope to see as well as you do.

One of my top ten choices in this challenge.
I am sorely disappointed in it's placement, but the single most important
statement that was made about this shot was your own:

I am proud of this shot.

That is what it's all about Nick!

Aha, so I saw this exact shot, so long for my memory telling me that the gull was in a different position the previous time I saw this scene. I didn't remember it was buy you, so I searched in the wrong places when I voted.

You know, without the gull's shadow, this photograph would be falling apart, cut in two halves by the embankment's edge. But the shadow is there, and this is a pretty strong image. I would lose the title, though: it's hard to tell that the guy is reading a newspaper, and it doesn't really matter, at least in my perception.

you know I only gave out three 10's, and this was one of them...and I stop and wonder and think...now this forces me to consider the value of this whole voting process on this site...it makes me tired to see people exploring the same things over and over simply to win nothing (a virtual ribbon), and then for so many people to simply breeze past such thought provoking work...so maybe I simply need a mental adjustment, a check up on my humility meter...
but one thing I refuse to do, is to be lulled into missing the exciting things I find on this site...and I am glad you are here, and sharing your work, because without shots like this...well I would simply move on...

What?! Why is it hard to see the quality of this image. I canĀ“t believe the score or place. This is an ERROR. Always one of my favorites.

I gave this an 8 as I loved it originally. Such a lousy placing for this image.

If the score perchance is a bit disappointing, look at the average from your commenters. One of my top picks for this challenge, but the fact you already recognize it as good and are proud of it beats placement anyday. You do exceptional and unique work - keep it up.

great shot has it all, the unkown model, nature and man standing up to one another, and the high contrast is very nice too. I also like how the bird is perfectly fframed betweeon the drain cap the reader and what ever the shiny object is on the left, good luck 10

Fascinating - makes me feel I want to get behind what the photographer is thinking and what he's relating this image with.

This is so good it's nearly bringing a tear to my eye...I hope this is doing well for you.

I have to stop voting for now...I want this one to stay with me a while.

too dark for me to see enough. but i do like the composition, and especially that flapping bird - i actually felt that the froze-motion bird and its' shadow on the stone is strong enough to stand on its own as a photo! good job.

(my monitor is kinda calibrated, by the way)

I love the contrast in this image and the little story it tells. The birds shadow is cool too. Back to bump you up to 9.

Oh I was so hoping to see this in the Best of Challenge.
You get the honors (if it is an honor) of my milestone 4,000th comment made on DPC since I joined.
This is one of the true gems on this site.
It's magical. It's amazing. It's a new favorite. Hope it does well as it should!

ahhhhhhhh, yes...
I read the news today oh boy...
this is too dark...ha, kidding!
I look at this and feel like I wish I could read the comments and then explain to people who don't appreciate it that it would be better if they just moved along to the obvious and straightforward wing...
and I only say this because I know the culture and I know I love this....10

highly original, just somehow lacking something. I suspect this would look better in print / larger size. maybe a little too dark

Nice capture. Good decision to go black and white. I hope the news is good since the bird is white, which stands for peace. I love the shadow cast by the bird. Nice lighting.

This is an interesting image, but too much detail is lost in the shadow areas for it to be fully effective. Curves should help you make some of the darkest areas a bit lighter.
