Stopped at a Telegraph Avenue street vendor's table and asked to shoot some photos of fossilized and polished ammonites.

Although this is an imperfect example, I thought the spiral was a good symbol for infiniteness, in this case an inward-moving one. Infinite does not always have to mean infintely large ...

Broken sunlight, macro mode, auto exposure & WB. To create the border I used Select All, Border 16 pixels, Feather 32 pixels (repeated twice), and then Fill with sampled color until most of the textured cloth background was covered. Two passes with USM at 66%, 0.6 dia, 7 levels.

Greetings from the Critique Club :)

Hi Paul...

Your subject choice here is interesting. The detail in this macro is good and the color adds some interest as well. There are a couple of things that could possibly make this shot stronger. 1 - A darker background would help create a higher level of contrast against the subject, which would make that detail stand out even more. 2 - It may have been possible to create an even tighter view rather than a straightforward photo of the entire subject... the rotation/spiral of this subject is more interesting, IMO, than the entire subject itself.

The vignette border, in this case, doesn't add much for me because there is not enough space surrounding the subject to accommodate it. My personal taste in borders for posting photos online is simply to separate the image from the background of the page it's displayed on and create a contrast for the image edges. Certain types of borders can become distracting, especially if the viewer finds himself asking why a particular border type was chosen.

Based on your description, I know you didn't have the options of creating a strong light scenario or changing the background, but I do see a lot of different and more interesting composition opportunities here :)

Keep up the good work :)

Some spirals do seem to go on forever but not this one, I see the beginning, I see the end. The lighting on this shot is a bit dark and a little too blue for my taste and the blurred edge really is distracting. A 4

nice luminous color, good motion for the eye to follow, don't like the light spot 7

This would have been better if the end of the spiral wasnt' shown and if the camera angle wasn't straight down.

I like the iradescent color of the shell, but it doesn't give me the feeling of infinite.

Very cool, is this a fossil? Not getting that infinite feeling with this. Good focus. Maybe a darker background to show more contrast around the edges of the shell.

I love the face on the nautilus; and nice shine; I don't like the blue place mat underneath, it is a color distraction- but once again- better thaan I can do

Pretty shell, looks very old. I like this shot for this challenge. I do think the lighting is good but also would of liked more dramatic lighting. The colors are awesome.
