Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Still Life (Classic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Lens: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
Location: My kitchen
Date: Nov 3, 2003
Aperture: 11
ISO: 200
Shutter: 13 sec
Galleries: Still Life, Food and Drink
Date Uploaded: Nov 4, 2003

Shot with the Canon 24-70/2.8L at 46mm with cross-screen filter, then cropped a little more in post.

Lit with two of those el-cheapo aluminum clamp-on reflector lights (using 40W bulbs), one on either side of the camera.

The reflective gold foil wrapper / neck of the bottle were maddeningly difficult to deal with and those reflections are the only part of the picture I'm not entirely happy about.

technically perfect but I can't see why it won.

I hate to be negative, but this won? I mean, technically it's pretty good, but it's just not that interesting or original. Maybe I'm missing something....

Wow, I am impressed! I didn't get to vote in this contest, but I wish I had. I would have surely rated this a 10. Also, how did you get those stars on the glasses? Was that your reflective lighting, or did you have a star filter on? :)

EddyG

Congratulations.

Your entry is similar to one I was working on for the Shadows II challenge and decided not to enter.

The one in my forum post below is just one version of it. I shot this setup numerous ways. I think I did like 125 shot total.

//www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=53042

I shot these in the garage where I could get total darkness even during the day. I used several candles for the lighting (nothing else) and did a long exposure.

Nice work

Jesus...go work for a f*cking dinnerware catalog.

Well you definitely deserve my apologies, and i definitely deserve a swift kick in the ass. Shouldn't have been so mean. It's not for me to say your work sucks, only to judge honestly what I like and don't like. Honestly, I don't like this picture, but I would be be remiss if I didn't say this: your photo "It's a journey, not a destination" is, to me, the embodiment of beauty. Had you entered it in this contest, I would have given you an 11, if that were possible; it's a photo for which you should get some serious recognition. So don't take me personally.

Nice choice of objects artfully arranged. The starlight effect adds a nice modern twist to this classic art form.

This is a great photo. I can't help but be reminded of some "love guide" - a little cheesy, but that's not a bad thing! :-) The only thing I think could be improved was to have spread that ribbon out through the scene. It looks almost unfinished laying coiled up.

very nice, love the lense flares. The composition is a bit static and the roll of ribbon looks out of place. You might have left the ribbon our all together and moved the berry bowl fron a bit the right glass back a bit which might have improved it or move the right glas back a bit switched the flowers and the berry bowl and move the left glas forward, behind the flowers.. Just a thought. Very good over all shot...and I do hoped you enyoyed the champagne. 7

Ah, a star filter in use. Good idea. Adds a little something extra to the shot.I personally would have like to have seen a few more elements used on the set up. Possibly some stawberries out in front of the bowl, and maybe some more roses, just some things to help take up more of the empty space in the foreground. The lighting is pretty good except for the hot spot on the side of the bottle neck.

Nice setup and I think the starlites actually work here. Brings some interest to the upper left part of the frame where it would have been complete darkness.. 8

Wow--a classic still life, well executed. Every item in the frame is there for a reason. The crystal bowl echos the glasses, and the gold ribbon echos the color in the bottle\'s label very nicely. Supurb. 10.

My first word that I can recall seeing this shot is WoW! :-) The glares on the glasses are brilliant, wonderful composition, colours, and everything is sharp. The only thing I don't like is the bottom left corner, the edge of the table, but I think I would be cruel if I gave you less than... 10 POINTS for this one, and my favourite during this challenge! :-)

The sparks add something extra to this picture, although a bit strong. The leave on the rose could have been removed. A good setup and atmosphere, fitting very well together.
