Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments.

I used Alot of tonemapping on this to get the desired effect. I wanted it to look dramatic. Burnt more of the sky, sharpened the Deer. Neatimaged the clouds a bit. and the usual curves and hue-sat, and selective colour.

Cheers

Superb. When I saw it on the homepage I thought, "that's like the deer in Richmond Park", and then that's where its from. Wonderful.

After looking at your portfolio for about the 10th time in the past year. I have to ask. Do you walk around with salt pellets in your pocket that these awesome beasts just follow you and your camera around? You have several great photos like this one. Very Amazing shot. I would have pinned the blue on this if it were up to only me.

Wow! Just wow, I love the what you have done in making this subject so dramatic. I didn't both to enter this contest because all the animals here are brown, so I figured a brown and white would not ribbon. Boy did you prove me wrong, using the sky and the colors on the horns and just everything is perfection.

Congrats Alex, I bet you were convinced all week with an 8+ score that you would have this one in the bag. I would have loved to seen your face this morning when you turned your computer on and find you didn't take the bluey but (only) the red ribbon :)

Bad news Alex... I'm gonna have to ban you. I used to OWN the 70-200 lens page, but you've been blowing right through it with these so-called "amazing" photos. Oh, suuuuure... that's fine if you like amazing. Some of us are into mediocre and would appreciate a little consideration. Sorry dude, but I really have no choice. You can come back when you switch to Nikon or buy a lens I can't afford.

Love the post-processing choices with saturation and sky color. The elk really pops. I'm really sorry about the one piece of horn sticking out of the photo, but it doesn't detract much. The square crop is effective here. 9.

Almost perfect, let me explain, the subject is so perfect in focus, while the background being so soft, pulls my eye away from the Elk, (hard to explain). Solid 9 all the same.

Perfect title. I feel like he is looking right at me. Beautiful shot and one of my faves of the challenge.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
01/26/2007 08:52:18 AM
Majestic this stag certainly is! The exposure and focussing couldn't be faulted - the detail in the texture of the coat and antlers is very good, and I love the light on the antlers. My quibble is with the composition - I presume that there is something that would spoil the shot if it included the stag's legs, but the composition as it is does spoil the overall effect. The other compositional issue, and one that you would have had more control over, is that the tip of the right antler has been cut-off. Despite that, a strong contender.
01/26/2007 08:23:58 AM
A beautiful image. An amazingly sharp photograph, one of my faves for this challenge.

01/25/2007 06:56:35 PM
A shot that easily makes my top5 faves from this challenge. Only reason I give this a 9 but not a 10 is because of his left antler being cut off at the top of the frame and because of the burning near the left side isn't too tidy. Awesome shot though. I have a good guess on the photog too. Wondering if I'm right ;) This style is just wonderful.

Amazing image! first, I am telling you I am giving you a 9, `cause for much that I loooved it I can see little details that dont make this a perfect image... 1-the crop that cuts the right horn, and 2-a little halo around the horns (but actually, I do like halos... :P) anyway, I guess you are gonna do great! so good luck :D

alex?

cool shot but a little over processed i find. The photograph looks a little to digital. and maybe the square crop could have been a little bigger to not let the right antler touch the frame, but that's a little detail. good work.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
01/22/2007 02:39:51 AM
wow...awesome shot. love the sky as background rather than the standard trees lots of folks have. only nitpic I have is cropping the antler tip in the top right of the frame.

01/22/2007 01:24:37 AM
Wow. Great capture. I'm amazed at the type of background you managed to include in the shot.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
01/22/2007 01:21:27 AM
The tone mapping, if that's what you used, is leaving artificial looking areas around the horns. The end result is almost like looking at a Diorama of an elk in a natural history museum. At the same time it's a really striking image. But it's hard to be sure if that's a live or a dead animal, the tonal balance is so unnatural. I'm assuming it's live because the fur doesn't look groomed. I wish I didn't have this ambivalence about the unnatural evenness of BG and subject. I wish the BG were a stop brighter than it is. Sigh. Good luck!
