Challenge: Minimalism II (Minimal Editing I*)
Collection: Challenges 2007
Camera: Canon EOS-30D
Lens: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS
Location: Wiesbaden, Germany
Date: Jan 21, 2007
Aperture: f/5.6
ISO: 320
Shutter: 1/400
Galleries: Black and White
Date Uploaded: Jan 22, 2007

Shot about a stop and a half under what the camera wanted. Cute little guy, but he was kinda scared - little dog, big train station.

Will probably not be minimal enough for most and score will dutifully reflect that. Or perhaps it just really does suck. Either way, I really like it.

From the camera jpeg, shot in B&W, resized, no sharpening.

you said I'm getting scary good at street b&w but I'd give my left arm to take this picture! and it's minimal editing!

How can this be a 5.6 ??? This is as near a perfect picture as I have seen on DPC. Just wonderful.

Really nice how you even saw this. I like the centered composition. And the dog's pose makes him even smaller.

I can see the emotion in the dog. It makes me nervous - what a success!

Good job Deb. I like the way that almost everything is either a silhouette or very bright. I think you did a fantastic job with the lighting in this shot.

A challenge fav fyi 8 Mini canine draws the eye to interesting levels of steps/platforms reflecting against the dark.

I liked this very much. The main subject is most definitely a very small part of the shot!
Yes, there is a lot in the frame, but the use of contrast to remove detail keeps the eye drawn back to the poor dog.
I also like your choice to cut off the head of the person, rendering them as merely another object towering over the tiny creature.
I really am surprised this didn't score higher!

It shows how small and scared he is. Where is his owner? Great pic, perfectly exposed.

I have searched through the challenge for those entries where the negative space is more than just a plain black or white backdrop because, whilst I think that technique often makes for some really strong and high impact images, I’m particularly drawn to entries where the negative space is relevant to the subject itself and actually contributes to the impact of the picture in a contextual as well as purely compositional way.

I really like your urban portrait which puts me in mind of Cartier-Bresson. The horizontals of the platforms and verticals of the people and lamp posts create a strong environmental frame for the main subject and the high contrast silhouette treatment works well too.

you probably got a hundred DNMC. But you got a 9 from me. I love this image. I love that the dog is the center of attention. I love the lighting and I love the shadows even more. The cigarette in the persons hand, the diagonals and horizontals and verticals... Oh, and the title. Great title.

This didn't strike me as particularly minimal, and the center alignment of the subject didn't really work for me, either. The other elements (the pole, the people) actually detracted from the minimal effect to my eyes.

nice creative use of silhouette. There must have been a huge glare off that sidewalk! I would have liked the composition a bit more if the dog wasn't so centered.

Nice use of black and white. Excellent lighting and use of it. This would have been a doddle to do in Photoshop, but achieving such good contrast at execution is superb. Composition could be a bit more simplified.
