 Talk about a last minute idea ... I'd been dwelling on this for days and I hated the concepts I'd come up with. I was quite despondent about it.

I came up with this concept a few hours before the challenge closed. My wife helped me with the figure and we fiddled around with it for an hour. I got a bunch of shots, found one that I liked and edited it.

I cropped the shot, high pass, cloned out a couple of small blemishes, contrast and saturation.

The book that I used was Kurt Vonnegut's 'Cats in the Cradle" ... sorry Craig! :)

POST CHALLENGE:

thanks for the wonderful result. 5th is my best ever finish ... i'm a little disappointed that 3 hours before the challenge i was 6.89 and dropped to 6.7 (would have earned me 4th place).

however i'm still pleased with the result. watch out scalvert!!! i'm after you mate! ;)

Why oh whyyyy did you have to use Cat's Cradle? If you want to rip up a book - even for art's sake - please pick something worth ripping up :(.

I love the concept here. The execution is so/so IMO, but this does not lessen my enjoyment of the image one bit. Well-conceived and decently delivered to us :-)

this is one of the most creative images i've seen in a while! i could see this being used in a public service campaign promoting reading. (btw, cat's cradle?)

OMG, Great concept. Very unique. I don't know what it needs, but it needs something else.

Maybe more seperation between the man and book. Rotating camera left a bit might make it better and allow the man to pop out.
