The book is by Louisa May Alcott.
This is the rose my boyfriend gave me for our one year anniversary. I held it over the patio in my backyard for a plain background that it would stand out against.

I cropped it more like everyone said.

With the bottom cropped so the leaves don't show, this would be a great photo. The subtle blue sheen on the red gives the rose texture that most flower photos seem to lack. 7

I'm sorry, but too literal for me. I've seen a good many very creative interpretations today and have to leave room to score them accordingly. I know it was a very hard topic though.

Nice looking rose. Good depth of field, subject pleasant contrasting with the background. 9

Nice shot but the white spots seem a bit distracting.

This is a pretty good shot. The rose is in good focus, and the color is beautiful. I'd've liked to see a tighter crop, though.

very pretty, well done

Nice velvet texture and dof. The only negative is the leaf at bottom doesn't help the photo at all. I would have cropped the rose more tightly, its so beautiful, why add a bad modifier.

what is interesting here, the flower of the large leaf that fills the bottom corner could have light it to add more mood. Its a pic you would expect to see in a encyclopedia under rose- give me some mood and emotion.

very nice shot, however the rose looks a little past it's bloom. I like the angle as I can see the many layers of the petals. Perhaps if the outer petals were ripped off to give it a younger look or if an entirely different one was used this shot might have matched, just incrementally more, the title. Meets the challenge well.

How pretty! Good composure. I would have preferred more DOP to bring the stem into focus.
