I wanted the colors to be less vibrant than they were in the original, which had an orange glow that, while pretty, didn't seem to match my expression.

*sigh* I know I'm setting myself up to score poorly, here. It's noisy (although I like the grain in this image) and was lit with a flash with no reflector and it's not sharp enough. And the background is textured oddly. In my opinion it portrays a "bad mood" well, but if people agree with me, then they won't agree with me enough to overcome the technicals (which I don't really see as flaws, anyway).

Kelly,
I think this photo has lots of potential. I like the skin tone a lot - think it matches well the mood you are trying to evoke. I also think you chose an excellent background. The slight texture adds depth without stealing the thunder from the subject.
The big issue, as other commenters have mentioned, is the lighting focus. Generally speaking, the eye is immediately drawn to the brightest area of a photo. In this case, it is the forearm rather than the face. Since this is basic, and you couldn't fix the lighting, I think a closer crop with the eyes in the upper 2/3 position would have helped bump your score up a few notches.
Hope this is helpful!

I already commented on pic during challenge, gave it a 5. I do agree that the light on the hand is distracting. Cheer up though, I got *booted* around for my Good shot, in which - guess what - I got called for both DNMC and grayish light! Just keep shooting!

Kelly, the DNMC voters thought you were *good* looking, so don't feel bad about that.

This was a subtle, bummed sort of sadness, the kind we feel every day. DPC voters want the person crouched in the corner chiaroscuroly, preferably naked. oh wait, that was the nude challenge. anyway, they like big emotion. they've got the popcorn out and they think they're at the movies... and not a good movie, either.

Aww, Kelly if it makes you feel any better, I gave this a 6 in voting. I think people were just mean! My "bad" picture got bad votes too!

Kelly, I think this is a great shot for the challenge but I think your face and hand is just a bit too bright. I gave you a 6 for this.

I'm not quite sure why you dragged in those 1s and 2s. I guess the DNMC crowd was being overeager as usual. It's pretty obvious to me that it's meant to be like a bad mood or upset moment. Who knows? I can't understand the voters here. It's what makes me really wary about entering some of the more abstract challenges (like now they have love and hate) because so many voters just seem to be waiting to find a reason to give out a 1 vote.

Normally I would say the lighting is bad (how fitting for this challenge) but in this case it actually seems to add to the emotion conveyed by the picture.

...you look bored, not sad.

the grayish cast here doesn't do much for the pic, but good try anyway

The photo doesn't seem so much as sad; it seems more contemplative. I think the lighting focus could be better...IMHO.
