Challenge: Trees (Minimal Editing I)
Camera: Canon EOS-1D Mark II
Lens: Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX Aspherical DF for Canon
Location: Cody, WY (East side of the North Fork)
Date: Feb 21, 2007
Aperture: 6.4
ISO: 200
Shutter: 400
Date Uploaded: Feb 21, 2007

I would mostly like to eliminate the power lines in the background, but hey what are you going to do in a minimal editing challenge. There is a few spots that i find a bit annoying that I would normally clone out. But again, minimal. the snow was falling and that is what created most of the spots, whether on the filter or just the flakes falling by. On a large version you can see all the little flakes falling quite well. This is a great tree and I have always wanted to photograph it. So this challenge finally gave me a reason to get out there and do it. I feel the storm added more feeling to the shot by fading the mountains in the background. After I shot this another local photog told me that if you shoot it from the other side, you eliminate the powerlines and still have a good background to work with. I am going to blame the fact that it was snowing really good and that is why I didn't bother to walk around the tree to the other side. Anyway, this is my first challenge in about nine months so hopefully I do well enough that it will encourage me to do it again.

I rotated 90 degrees ccw, then sharpened, resized and saved.

Just a beautiful shot. Love the colors above the tree. What gave it such an amazing glow above the ground? Composition is right on. And love the title. a 10 from me.

That is simply freeking awesome - the sora desat here is odd and must be climactic. A wonderous entry for minimal edit.

My goodness - I've seen this tree before - this is in Wyoming, isn't it? My grandmother is buried very close to this tree - I almost started crying when I opened the photo.

What a remarkable tree. This would make an excellent "motivational" type poster. Or just a great print. I'm assuming you used a filter for your sky - adds impact, though I think it would have stood without it just fine.

One of my favorites...love the subtle colors. I appreciate the "layering" of objects from foreground to background...it really makes the composition exquisite. :)

took me a second but I realized what seems strange here. The color transition from top down to middle works well, but then the bottom is stark white. And in the middle you have a rock and a tree. The image as whole doesn't suit my eye. 5

Looks almost like the tree is hugging the rock, or pushing back. Very cool capture; a little overexposed on my monitor.

Extraordinary subject (and I like gardening and nature of this type) but I find the colouring rather strange. I think I would have appreciated a b/w rendition much more. 8.

Cool little tree. Is the sepia at the top done with a filter of some sort ?

Love the amazing growth - Well spotted. I just find the filter a little too much. It should have been used much higher and maybe on a wider aperture.
