This is Romy again. Not sure if this will score well, but I don\'t care. I like the picture. This girl is to me the most exciting model I've worked with!
By the way, I haven't cheated on the length of her neck. This shot is pretty much straight from the camera.

Here are my outtakes:

One more thing... I was a bit annoyed by some of the comments made by several people for this entry. No, she is not anorexic, she is in fact beautifully shaped and very sporty. I invite anyone to critique my shot in every aspect of it! But when it comes to some stupid comments seen bellow, it becomes offensive.
I have seen anorexic girls, they have no tits, no ass, bones coming out from everywhere. Romy is far from this, she's got one of the nicest breast I've seen and a wonderful round peachy ass.

Anyhow, thank you for the ribbon, I am highly honored by 99% of the nice comments. And one special word for the Red ribbon of this challenge, which I think is wonderful!

I'm actually really inspired by this shot! I've been thinking about doing something simulare. More of a shot that is a silhouette. but all the important details on the body are highlited... i guess we'll see once its done...

Did i say that i love this yet? well i do :)

I love this photograph. I think the model is beautiful, and I think she must be very skilled to pose in the ways she has. I do not think she is too thin, but from what I've seen, this opinion won't really matter in the end.

On all the controversy, I don't think it spoke well about your character that you marked every comment for your side of the argument as helpful and left every comment against your side unmarked. There were people saying they thought the model was fine, but they weren't for you, so they must have been against you. People like riot had very good points, and it seems like you simply ignored them. However, you did pay attention to those who were making rude and ugly comments, and you grouped those like riot with them. I'm not sure where rugman's comment about calling him fat came from, but if you did hunt him down somehow and do so, I would say that is extremely immature and unnecessary and kind of creepy.

If Romy knows about the controversy, please tell her still that she is absolutely beautiful, though I truly hope that she has the confidence to have ignored the rude comments, because there is no need to pay attention to them with her form and face.

out of all the pictures on DPC, this has to be one of my top 10 favorites of all time. i can't believe i didn't have it as a fav already :D that's fixed...

Romy you are absolutely beautiful, don't listen to the negative comments. my lord, a model with that sporty of a body who can shape it like this....you can and will go far.

best of luck to both of you

Kenskid - Thank you for your..."then I see nothing wrong with the comment, if that is what the picture "said" to you."...

I think Romy has very pretty features and lovely fingers, but it is almost like Toyan was trying to make her look "Fashion Designer Thin."

I don't know why he should get so bent out of shape by some of the anorexic remarks that were made, when his own were pretty rotten... "I have seen anorexic girls, they have no tits, no ass, bones coming out from everywhere"...

You say your are tired of all of this. Me, too. Hope I don't sound like someone who would "jump your ass" I don't mean to - but if you look like George Clooney or McMcDreamy it might be tempting.

04/01/2007 09:27:59 AM
IMO...if after looking at the picture you think or say "you should have taken her to McDonald's and bought her a Big Mac and some Fries", then I see nothing wrong with the comment, if that is what the picture "said" to you

I'm tired of all of this. As long as someone doesen't use vulgarity I feel all comments are ok.

Like I said before, if you as a photographer had a picture in a show or gallery, and you overheard 10 people says "this is a great photo" and one or two say, "she's way too skinny, they should feed her", would you call that person out and tell them that their comments are not welcomed?

Before you jump my ass....I think the picture is fine and the thinness of the model doesn't bother me at all.

Why not judge this work on its artistic merit which is unusually high for a top DPChallenge pick? While I agree this is a public site the young lady is really unknown to almost everyone viewing this. She is lovely, the photograph is lovely, if stylized, which I would think, from the title, is the whole point of it. LAY OFF!!! Aneurexia is a complicated and complex illness that NO ONE can diagnose from one very artistic shot. She does not deserve this! MMM This is one of the gripes I have with this site generally. Choices seem often to be made on visceral reactions to the subject instead of technique. MMM

Congrats on your well deserved blue ribbon! I gave this a 10 and predicted it would ribbon.

After seeing your outtakes, I am curious about Romy's hair. Did she shave it for this shoot? She really is a beautiful girl.

I am 5'10" and once upon a time I was as thin as Romy. Not anorexic, just naturally tall and thin. Now that I am 42 and have had 4 children, I am rathar plump. :-)

Great shot, great lighting, great pose, great model... i could continue but i'm just gonna say that your work is great! Congratulations on the Ribbon and first and foremost the incredible artwork of this photo!!

about all the comments:
People are entitled to their personal opinions. However, that does not give them the right to be insulting and mean. Weight and appearance are very sensitive subjects in our modern society. It's very hard to find a person who doesn't give a flying f*** about their looks. So don't comment on a person's appearance in a way that can be understood insulting. Always at least TRY to put yourself in their position. klstover found the right words to say about bodies, i won't repeat them.

But obviously, people, whose comments are rude, immature and definately made without any truth or proof, have either never been insulted/hurt OR they have been very often and this is their way of defence.

So it is our job, we who think we can comment and critisize politely, to do so and try to teach others, also politely, to do the same.

This is by far my longest comment!

Toyan, again, congrats on an incredible photo - you are truly an artist worth praising!

Kistover- I didn't mean to insult Romy. I think she has very nice features. It doesn't matter to Toyan if we like the picture or not. He does. If he had posed her, so she wouldn't have looked so skinny, I think it would have been more pleasing to the eye. Wonder if he had chosen a very overweight model, doing the same pose, would he have received a Blue and all the kudos from you fellow DPCers? (No, I am not overweight and have probably been veiwing photographs longer than most of you.) Is there a mc febo in America and what is a frikadel? Sounds dirty.

Okay, I was trying my best to hold my tongue but I have just had it! Arrrgh!!! I personally think that it's totally valid to say "oh, you know, that picture looks kinda creepy and somewhat gross to me; I'd visually prefer a model that weighs more; - that's your opinion as a viewer of the shot. But saying "give the girl some food" is totally different and insulting.

I had a close friend in high school who was very thin and ate everything. I saw a person accuse her of having a disease she didn't have - not ask, caringly, if she had a problem she needed help with, but accuse in a very offensive manner. The person accusing was the one who had a problem.

You know what's really, truly ironic? The people making these stupid comments... well if you take a look at some of their self portraits, they're not the traditional "western society's view of beauty" themselves. What would you think if someone left a comment on your photo that "oh my gosh that's gross you have a problem, you should put a lock on your fridge"?

People's bodies are different and that does not automatically mean there is something wrong.

Your lighting and technique are spot on perfect for this type of shot.

Lovely work, despite all the fuss. Reminds me of paintings by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres where he seemingly elongated the form of his models in pursuit of their "pure form".

Most great artists have to deal with their fair share of controversy. Warranted or not. Regardless of the merits of the criticism, the greatest of them rise above it all. Personally I think this image is stunning and powerful on many levels. You and your model have done each other proud. Well done.

I think she's absolutely beautiful! Long necks isn't anything abnormal or disgusting - and she certainly doesn't look diseased!
Besides, now that we know who the model is, we can just go back and look at the crossdressing challenge and see that she looks as healthy as the next girl!
She is obviously very thin - but it's the angle of her body that brings out her ribs - standing up straight we probably would see a lot less of them. She is not anorexic, that's pretty obvious to me.

Anyway, as a whole I think this shot is beautiful. The absence of a right arm is why some might feel she has a bit of an 'alien' look, but I kind of like it. The focus of the image is very clear.
I also congratulate you on getting one model to look so very different in two different images - the crossdressing picture of her is miles different (but still beautiful). This picture is a lot more 'artsy' - and I really like that. :)

Congratulations on your Blue Ribbon! Your art has done exactly what art has done for centuries: create conversation, whether it is political or social, good or bad, you have people talking! Some comments may seem arguable, but people are expressing themselves!

How dull it would be to have everyone agree on one thing - nodding our heads in unison without saying a word.

I think the main point was missed here and instead, feelings were hurt. This piece of art will probably be hanging in a museum years from now evoking the same feelings and people will be gathered around it arguing over it's expression and how it makes them feel! What an accomplishment that would be - and that I'm sure most of us hope to achieve one day!

Great job!

I find this image extremely well done technically. Artfully it is very interesting and although I don't quite understand how the model could make her neck look that long, she is very beautiful. She looks thin and lean, but very healthy.

Caring about a score and caring about the reputation of your model are VERY different. I get that you were referencing the T&A comment to his comment. But don't be so silly as to think just because she HAS them means she should show them off. Come one.

It seems to me you can't handle the heat by taking a general statement about "fat asses" personally. Its silly to guess yourself skinnier than he and yet to assume the think the comment was directed at yourself and taking it to heart... and if you believe Laurent to be fat you certainly haven't done your homework.

I must say I feel very sorry for the model due to all of the controversy created by this photograph. It takes a lot of strong self esteem to be a healthy model in this day and age. I can attest that some of us cannot help that we are thin, it's not always about self image, it's about genetics. In fact, some of us would like to have a little more meat, too bad our metabolism says otherwise.

I like the creative approach you took with this image.

This is a beautiful photograph of a beautiful girl...well done

[quote=ShutterHack] WoW, this shot created some controversy,
First off, I dont see anyone complaining about the positive comments of people saying this is a beautiful shot, blue for sure, 10 etc...
**---Why would someone complain about that?? There is reason however to complain about inappropriate, immature comments made by amateurs---**
people who find this shot unattractive, gross, or haunting, also have an opinion and have a right to express their opinion what ever their opinion may be. trying to berrate a person for his or her opinion is the true problem here!
**---Yes they do, but this can be done tastefully with maturity also..Also-don't be a hypocrite-you say everyone should be able to say whatever they want but then you say they shouldn't be called out on the comments they make????.---**

You guys can be as pissed off as you want but as an artist/profesional you would this you would want to hear both good and bad however critical it may be. If you can't handled the comments dont submit!
**---There is such a thing as constructive criticism, but the majority of these people including myself don't have the skill level to give a critique that could even help improve on this already spectacular shot.---**
It is a shame that such an awesome piece of work has become the subject of such ugly comments (and no I don't mean all of them are).
To Toyan-this is an amazing shot and piece of art, do your best to ignore all the rude and simply _____ comments made. Congrats on your Ribbon, it was very well deserved and I look forward to seeing more of your work. It is so refreshing to see your models shown with such personality and individuality! Keep it up, and thanks for sharing.

Well, for fear of being reported, I won't call you an ass, but your words do seem to be that of a very ugly donkey. Maybe you are new here, but if that is the case, I suggest you learn how to behave as a considerate adult--fast!

Yes, she is very skinny, but that's what makes her different in her own way. You can tell she's not anorexic b/c she has meat on her arms. My ribs show all the time, and I'm actually 10 pounds overweight. It's all about how you're built.

Actually, anorexia is a disorder of perceived body image and behavior. Therefore, you can't pass judgment on this lady if she is or is not anorexic, not having personally met her.

Be careful of using medical terms in a nonspecific manner, because sure, while 'anorexic' can be used as an adjective to describe a too-thin person, it has a very specific meaning, and can be offensive.

My immediate reaction was that this model had some type of decease and was truely handicapped? Sorry, thats what I came to mind the instant i looked at it. Some how if he neck is normal, it appears to be severly distorted and very unattractive to me. I reserved comment as I normally do when its negative. you create more intrigue with your portraits than most people do with complex arrangements...
wonderful skill, to see the human form as expressive and interesting than simply a pretty object than attracts interest...

All I gotta say is congrats Laurent and shame on those people who are rude and incosiderate enough to comment on peoples appearances in dpc challenge entries.

I don´t know about Laurent´s models or other peoples models but mine DO read the comments after challenges are over and reading stuff about how people think you are anorexic or gross would definately make me second guess if I wanted to pose for another DPC challenge entry. It´s not a question of having thick skin or not, comments like that are just rude and if I were the model, I just would not bother with it again. What the heck has a models appearance got to do with anything anyway and how can commenting on their appearance ever be considered constructive and insightful, I mean what the heck is the photographer supposed to do? How are comments like that helping the photographer, model or this site? Would you say something like that to a persons face?

Blah, I am so pissed off on Laurents behalf but won´t say anything more, crawling back under my rock now...

First off, I didn't call a lot of people fat asses. Second, I said only 1 person was anorexic. The person who posted this said he did not care how it scored, which is obviously untrue. I am only saying that if you can't take criticism, don't post anymore. And if she's not anorexic, well shame on me for sayiny it. But shame on you for calling me and others fat asses, when most of us are probably skinnier than you. Enjoy your 1st place ribbon and handle it like a professional. And finally, I was not looking for a free nude pic, Toyan is the one who brought this up, I was just referencing my comment to his. Congrats on your ribbon, and good luck in the future.

If you can't handle the heat, stay out of the fire.

Toyan, Forget all the rude comments from those who don not what it truly means to be anorexic or just a skinny person in general. Too many people today think that if you are skinny by nature, you are sick and need a cheeseburger. I know girls who are this skinny, and can eat a whole pizza and not gain a pound! It's genetics.

This is a breathtaking image and I find it to be absolutely beautiful!

I'm glad you pushed the edge with this photo. It deserves the blue.

You are being rediculous and childish. You do not know this model or her eating habits. I have been accused of being anorexic a lot when I was younger and I ate like a freakin horse. It is NOT fun. So why is it ok for you to be poking your finger calling people anorexic but someone else can't say fat ass? Either is just as hurtful. And no one said YOU were. It was a general statement, where as people are saying THIS MODEL specifically is unhealthy, no one is saying... look at this photo of a fat ass.

The artists shows what he wants. This is a brilliant image and it's not his duty to show of her T&A to get some drooling "hot" comments and make her look more "normal". The beauty of this image is that she is unique.

Congratulations!

Beautiful portrait of a fascinating and strikingly interesting model, a photographer's model, to be sure, apparently as much in sync with herself as with the photographer and an idea of pure form.

I am amazed at the seamless integration of the many parts and processes that appear to have been combined here as if incidentally, without artifice or strain. Neither could I imagine of a better way to highlight and present the unique features of the young lady. The pose reflects the manner of photography as much as the care and thought the image evokes as a whole.

When you've got the good fortune to find a model so lovely AND with the ability to express herself in such an amazingly diverse way it truly is like finding a diamond mine, isn't it. Just a gorgeous photo. How dare people say she is anorexic. They don't even know her. My neice is in cheerleading, dance, and gymnastics and looks almost like the girl in your photo. She is far from being anorexic. She eats like crazy never throws up and never gains weight. I lived with her for three years and know this. But congrats on the ribbon. You have talent.

Congrats on the 1st place.
Your shot is absolutely stunning, I find myself wondering if I will ever be able to create such great work.

I wanted to support you on your rant against some commenter's, I understand how frustrating it can be when people talk about stuff that is none of their business and specially when it has nothing to do with your work. I believe anorexia has much more to do with behavior than weight, so it can´t be judged by photographs.

Well done.

Probably the "best" ligting I've seen on a model here to date. Everything works here, the front and back lighting draws the strange shape, interesting looking model and pose, colors, just all great! I do also like the outtake with the same model. Well done!

Laurent!! Super shot, I knew it when I first saw it that it would ribbon. Respect!

In my opinion your model is not anorexic, I have seen anorexic and although your model is very slim I wouldn't count it as anorexic. I know it is difficult but let any mean comments against the model fly by you. It shouldn't overshadow your win of this challenge. Very much looking forward to your further work.

Laurent, firstly Congratulations on your ribbon - this one really did stand out from the rest. Re. the perceived negative comments - I want to say that you have evoked HUGE emotional response from this image. People have been moved to leave many comments during and post challenge. What an exceptional honour for you. People have invested time and thought in responding to your photo. People have also been honest enough to give a true insight into how they reacted to the image.

Without fail, the commentors that revealed that they thought she looked anorexic, have also indicated an admiration for the shot in terms of technicals etc...
To say they think she looks anorexic, does not carry the thought with it that she is ugly....
A large number of the comments around her thin body have come from males - interesting enough...?
As a woman, I am ashamed to admit, I would give a whole LOT to look this thin, but at the same time I am disturbed by her frail body and would worry if my daughter ever looked like this.
It's a disturbing image - you set out to create this look and you achieved your goal. It's an astounding image and one which will stay in people's minds for a long time. Well done.

In the past, others have asked for and received comments on "no Comment Pics" why their portraits did so badly - responses have alluded to the models' pimples, poor skin quality, simply subjective beauty and so on. Those comments have been welcomed.
So as fir3bird said - sit back and enjoy your success and stop pouting!!! This site is about sharing and learning together - you can't do that if people aren't honest.

Aside from any comments from me about the models weight. I think it's an amazing photo. The sculpturing of her pose and the light choice is very artistic albeit 'Alienish'. I am most certain many people can assume peculiar poses that aren't necessarily flattering, but interesting.

It won for a reason. Not your ordinary fare. Favs!

"Cheeseburger in her hand?"...SO WHAT ! My god are you and your model that sensitive? You have a picture that invokes some to make comments that she is too thin or looks anorexic and it upsets you. IMO noone INSULTED you or your model. When you put a picture on public display, you have to know that you will get bad and good comments. And I'll say it again...none of the comments I've seen are even remotly "insulting".

Let's say that you had this picture in an art museum and many people were commenting out loud. 10 people said the image is beautiful but 2 other people said..."she looks anorexic" or "she needs to eat a cheeseburger"...would you call those commenters out and tell them their comments were out of line?

There were a few comments about the anorexic look but none that I would say is "mean" or outright insulting. The few that commented on that aspect are just commenting on what the shot "said" to them....and that's what comments are all about.

OK, I'll go straight to the point:
"you need to put a cheeseburger in her hand!!"
"This model looks anorexic and would probably be thrown out as a ramp model in Europe"
I don't know about you, but I find this mean. Just try to put yourself in HER position. Again, I invite anybody to criticize the concept / technique / idea of my shots, and that's what I'm here for. But when it comes to just throw some of the aforementioned comments, I just find it out of place. Simple as that.

Wow, I really love this picture!
I must confess that I didn't find the time to vote, but I did browse the photos and this one really stuck out!

I also feel compelled to say that I'm really surprised to see some of the comments people make. I would have thought that some amateurish professionality would be in order since,in my books, you should never comment on the model, per se, when judging a photo. But I suppose that in a community as large as this there are bound to be some rotten apples.
Not only is it rude and ignorant to judge someone solely by an artistic photograph(since we all know photos can be deciving), but it's also hurtful and mean.

Keep up the good work, man. You are lucky to have such a talented model on your side, both of your skills complement each others.

Congratulations on a wonderful image. It really deserves the blue ribbon. I've been liking your other work since you joined the site. I didn't vote on this image as I don't vote on challenges I don't enter. I would have scored this a 10 with no hesitation. However; I think your offense to some of the comments is unwarranted. Only the one about "ramp models" would I see as even slightly offensive. You'll find most of the comments about anorexia or "she should eat something" are from people who seem to care for the health of the model. You really didn't think you could place such an exotic image of the human form here and not get some unusual comments, did you???? You selected for this pose consciously I'm sure. So sit back and enjoy your success!
03/26/2007 09:31:14 AM
You certainly show those drooling wannabes that no matter the camera (350XT for instance rather than a 3K Canon 5D), if you got what it takes you can take fine photos. I think you have got what it takes plus a nice unusual model too. Well done to you both. I look forward to seeing more. Don't let the critiques get you down. Remember, mostly all publicity is good.... as long as your heart was in the right place...

What an amazing photograph... simple, yet beautiful and so interesting. I will be surprised if this isn't in the top 10. I really like the lighting, and the model has such a unique look. Under other circumstances I would probably find her too thin, but it works for this shot in such a superb way. Don't have much of anything negative to say about it... great composition, color, and poise. Good job.

Uhm... Don't exactly know what to say about this. Very different indeed. Lighting is spot on, and the composition is supurb.

Was she in Jason and the Argenoughts.
Exellent lighting technique.
Please show her where the Fridge is thogh !

This picture is really... interesting. its just odd because she looks somewhat anorexic, & her neck looks too long. not to insult the model, but her body looks really unhealthy & i dunno... i guess it adds to the picture, but then it kinda takes away from the picture because i feel like i'm focusing more on how unhealthy she looks & less on how good the photo is =/

very good lighting, pose and expression. the greyish tones perfectly match her thin, androgyne body. the red varnish adds the necessary female touch

very nice tones and composition. Love the simplicity of the shot. The only thing is that the position seems to exagerate the length of here neck which makes it a bit strange. But very nice overall.

I'm struggling with this one. The lighting is right for this subject and the pose is strange to me, but it seems to be right for your model.Everything seems creepy & disturbing though.I want to give you my vote based on the quality of your photo, and I don't want to be swayed because I find your subject odd & not natural looking at all.Kinda freaky. This is the most emotion I've felt about a photo on this site so far..I think that's worth a lot and this to me is a 10.Can I say this with out hurting your feelings or the models, but I could go forever with out seeing her posed like this again, under this lighting. It looks more like a movie poster for some futuristic anorexic prisoner.Still a 10 for me though.I can't wait to find out who took this..REALLY POWERFULL IMAGE

Wow this is very interesting! I'm pretty sure I know who this is.

Either way. Great, out of the box shot. Really intersting subject and I love the glowing skin tones.

This model looks anorexic and would probably be thrown out as a ramp model in Europe, but it is a very interesting and disturbing image.

This one is pretty awesome. Love the lighting and her pose, it is pretty amazing. 9

This shot is just perfection. The lighting the colour the pose are supurb as is the focus and even the nial varnish blends in well. It grabs attention and is very emotive = 10+

I have to give this a super high score because it's a fantastic shot...but no one should have a neck this long...seriously. Great job...I'm predicting a ribbon for this one.

wow, this is definately one to stop and look at. the composition is marvelous and incredibly intriguing. The curves of her body to her neck really create and interesting shape and movement here. This is an absolutely fascinating photograph. I can't not give this a ten :)

This is so well done! The focus. The lighting. The composition. The person's "look" is a little disturbing -- only by how frighteningly thin!! But the portrait is great.

Wow, I mean wow, is this body real? The lighting is outstanding but the skin body and the long neck looks extremely unreal. I give it a 10 anyway.
