This is the view from my house and this is the first time I can actually catch lightning, I had tried before unsuccessfully.

Post Challenge:
Thank you all for all the comments and votes.

I don’t see why some of you had to make such a big deal about including the editing method in the title. The reason I did it is that I had posted this picture to another website and I received all sorts of “that’s fake” comments. And it’s NOT fake so I didn’t want people to think it was, especially under expert editing rules. I probably should have written (not a composition) instead of (BASIC editing) but that was the first thing that came to my mind.

Here is an edited version, made after the comments that some of you made, thank you!

great capture - not a bad view from your home either.

Why not 4 and 5 to the Idiots list(38 more idiots)? This is number one photograph alltime of this website! Nine of eight should have the higher total not 6!

For some reason when there's an expert edit challenge I end up getting something I like that would fit but (like this one) would be just great under basic edit and I never use it. The same thing happened with tryptic - I was going for a 3-banger but ended up with one image that was just great - -oh well, I can see the point of putting the Basic edit in the title -- you'll never make everyone happy and expert editting haters would definitely think this was fake -- I live the reflection - I wonder whether it might have been funt to mess around with the dodging and burning and saturation to get more contrast and drama.
OH, BTW - incredible capture! ( obviously)

A truly great capture - you must have been thrilled. As journalism goes this ticks lots of boxes and as a landscape it's very intriguing. A superb and memorable lightning shot.

Again, this is an awesome shot. Just chiming in to support you on your choice of title. And to tell you that I prefer your original editing. I like the moodiness added by including the darker parts of the ocean horizon. Gives the shot better scale IMO. Great shot. You got a personal Blue Ribbon for me on this one...

Again, 1s and 2s and 3s!!! Come on, this is starting to annoy me - What is the point of taking the time to vote if people are going to trash a beautiful picture - still # 1 (or 2) in my book!

All the trolls need to be placed in a trench somewhere!! There are trolls everywhere and they just suck. This shot should have placed higher, it's stunning!

Agreed - people who voted 1 - 4's on this should seriously be smacked with the troll hammer.
DPC admin, please do something ? Trollage spoils the fun and ruins peoples chances.
If this image was not abided by the rules it would have been DQ'd.
It's real and it's fantastic - I cant believe it didnt ribbon.

Why include the editing method in the title, I really don´t care what was used to edit it as long as it´s legal for the challenge it´s in. Just seems like you are bragging you got a lighting in the photo wich to me is not such a big deal really although I appreciate it´s not easy either.

Anyway shot is pretty good but nothing that is blowing my socks off, mostly it isn´t composed terribly well but that lighting drags it up above average. Gave a 6.

I do like the shot, but I don't see why you've put (BASIC editing) in the title. So what if you didn't use the full range of editing capabilities available. As has been pointed out in the forums, just because it's available doesn't mean you have to use it, and good pictures don't necessarily need all available techniques used on them.

Are you expecting extra credit because because you edited the picture less? Do you feel that the image won't measure up to others that do use more post-processing?

Just my thoughts. I'd suggest next time you just edit the image 'til you're happy with it and submit :)

Great moment, very nicely captured. The lightning works very well in the center of the frame since it is such a dominating subject in the photo. My favorite thing about this shot is the dramatic scale. Great image.

Yikes - I am glad you weren't on that point! Nice image - but I would think that making the statement so matter of factly that you did this in "Basic" is probably causing your score to suffer. I like it 8

Spectacular! I'm sure you'll get all kinds of comments about how well everything is lit.. The marina in the foreground provides a depth often lacking in lightning captures.

This is an amazing lightning bolt you captured. Very dramatic and you even got a wonderful reflection across the foreground boats. I've tried photographing lightning on numerous occasions and I can tell you this, you will be hard pressed to capture more this good. It looks like it was captured early morning or dusk which is even more difficult for lightning.

With this image it might be time to learn more sophisticated editing if that is the reason you submitted under basic editing only(though you did make it 720 pixels wide). This picture deserves better treatment.

You might want to consider cropping about 100 pixels or so from the far right. This will offset the bolt for added viewer interest and counterbalance it against the darker clouds on the right. There is much that can and should be done with this image with post processing. If done this one is worthy of selling and hanging framed on walls.

This image will get a good score because it is such a dramatic capture, but it SHOULD have been a ribbon winner.

Awesome. I hope there's details about the capture/editing. While there are many nice landscape images, I have to give this a 10. The scene, the timing, details... great image. This is the type of photo I'd like to produce.

Really nice shot and even more so considering the limited post production you apparently did. Keep in mind, however, that the challenge allows expert editing and most people, myself included, will probably judge equally against others that have done more extensive post production.

Again, nice shot.

heh, I was going to add a (Advanced editing) to my title. ;) Nicely captured. I may have cropped some off the bottom to remove some of the land, but perhaps I'd have to see it. It's unfortunate that great bolt decided to go almost smack in the middle of the shot. 7
