I took this picture of a novice monk in a temple close to my place. I was amused by his childlike demeanor and for me, that captures the essence of simplicity of human nature. He was supposed to behave in a simple way as a monk but who can take away his youthful exuberance? For me, he was simply a child.

First of all, this photo is absolutely excellent. Secondly, I have a question. I teach primary students in China, and this little sign he's making with his hand means the number eight in China, and eight is a lucky number here. So all the kids make this sign and it's supposed to be a really cool thing to do. Something akin to chunking the deuce in the states or flashing a peace sign. Does it mean something similar in Thailand?

This capture next to your portfolio and bio is beginning to show a signature style (a varied but consistent way of seeing). A remarkable feat with only three photos to go by.

A perfect photo of a perfect being with some minor and neglegible flaws. ;-)
(The title, however, cannot match it).

The intelligence of this young face, the gesture... striking!

Technical: Most all images submitted fit the challenge. This fits well for me. I really expected more "Eastern" themed images for this challenge than were submitted! Exposure composition focus lighting all very good.

Personal: This photograph makes me curious to know more about this kid, what he's pointing at (if anything), what is behind him, where he is..... which means the photographer did a good job!

My vote: 7

Wooonderfull! My this weeks favourite! I like the colors, the composition and the pose of the novice. And to me it fits the challenge very well although some people might say that it is not simple in an abstract way, but to me simplicity also means reduction to the essentials and that is shown here very well. Hope you win!

Very nice photo, technically, and beyond technical skill. Keep up what you\'re done here. One thing I like is the placement of the subject - and how theres that empty space behind where he\'s looking. You\'re in the running for top spot.

Both! This is such a wonderful shot. No advice for technical merit needed. Love the look and the pose. Colours are nice & bright with great composition. Predicting a high finish! The last one I predicted on won! Good luck!

Awesome photographic story and color. And it doesn't hurt to have such a cute subject either!

if the wall continued further to the right, and this wasn't a candid, it might have been nice to move the kid over a little for a shot against just the wall. as it is, i still like the photo and title, but think that it would benefit tremendously from a more plain/uniform background.

Beaufiul portrait, nice composition. The highlight in the middle is a little distracting but the eyes are quickly drawn to the face of the subject. 7

Your photo says it all...and your words (title) seem to detract from it, sadly. 6

this is very nice - the kid/monk is wonderful with a potentially impish look that is charming, light a little harsh on nose and shoulder, color is appealing

Stunning photo. Beautifull lighting, great composition. A ribbon here I hope. He does look rather cheeky for a monk, I wonder what he was thinking about. 10
