Challenge: Water (Advanced Editing I*)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Lens: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro
Location: My front yard
Date: Dec 12, 2003
Aperture: 16
ISO: 400
Shutter: 4.0 sec
Galleries: Nature, Macro
Date Uploaded: Dec 14, 2003

Shot with the non-USM Canon 100mm/2.8 Macro with a full set of Kenko extension tubes (12mm+20mm+36mm).

Got lucky and had our first "real" snowfall during this challenge (although it didn't last long or accumulate; so it is a good thing I got up when I did!) Caught some snowflakes on a piece of black velvet fabric. Lit by the naturally overcast sky, which wasn't very bright early in the morning (hence the 4-second exposure).

Unfortunately the snowflakes were very small and often falling in "clumps". But occasionally an individual snowflake would land intact, like this one, which was only about 3/16" across.

Post-processing: cropped and then removed the details of the velvet texture visible at this level of magnification.

Wow- way cool (literally). You must have some gear to produce this. Have you read the stories of "Snowflake Bentley"? Look him up on the Internet- you'll love his photos too!

Beautiful capture of a snowflake. The black background frames this very well and helps it pop out of the shot. The intricate design of the snow is highlighted by the wonder lighting.

Snowflakes always appeal to me. I don't see much benefit in the space around it though so I would have filled the frame more. Good focus and lighting.

Original for this challenge. If it's real, you did a wonderful job, if not, you did a wonderful job thinking of it.

Ice crystal? Snowflake? Whatever, it is really a beautiful shape and the way you've captured the glitter is amazing. This should take a ribbon.

This is wonderful! B&W was an excellent choice, and ice is water for sure, just a different aggregate. These shapes you caught here are amazing, just one little thing I could mention: I would have left equal space between the photo's edges and the snowflace, because your subject is (almost) symmetric.
