This wasn’t meant to be a challenge entry. I was doing some milk drop hitting milk experiments (did about 500 shots and trashed all but 4 of them ;-) Anyway, of the few left this was the most unusual and also looked Silky Smooth – so that’s when I thought of using it as a challenge entry.
I hope people aren’t getting sick of seeing this type of image. I stood looking at this in the camera display in utter disbelief (and joy) at getting such a capture.
In fact, I like this so much, I don’t mind it bombing (well, not too much anyway.... ;-)

Woohoo!!! Thanks for the votes and comments (constructive criticism and great encouragement, brilliant!) and also thanks for the great score. I’m just so over the moon about this, I’ll leave for work in a few minutes with a huge grin on my face. Don’t think I’ve ever hit the update button as much as I have in this last week (it’ll probably fall apart soon ;-)

I am in disbelief as well... I registered on this site just to put a comment on this incredibly perfect shot. Mother nature is so perfect that makes me think of American Beauty when they say that sometimes there is so much beauty that it hurts...

Also, I disagree with the commenters who said that the DOF is too shallow. IMO, having the far side of the splash slightly out of focus is fine given that the nearer half of the splash is quite sharp. The near part keeps the viewer's eye, since it's brighter, in focus, and has a closer view of the most interesting details (the small round droplets around the outside of the ring).
I like your DOF, and given that you shot at f/16, I wouldn't have gone any smaller with the aperture either. Nicely done!

I'm glad you mentioned this, Colin. High speed photography has it’s own rules and you take what you get. There is no aperture I haven’t tried, no light variations I haven’t tried in the tens of thousands of experimental images I’ve done trying to get good splash images.
Getting the focus perfect is practically impossible because the photographer has no perfect control over exactly where and if the drops will meet. Under the circumstances, not only was I completely satisfied with the focus, I was thankful to get such an unusual capture.

While I was a little off with my comment during the challenge, I still stand by my feeling that something wasn't right. It's over-sharpened, and when I see over-sharpened I think out of focus and motion blur. The center pillar looks all kinds of funky.

Don't get me wrong.. if I had taken the shot I would be thrilled with myself, but I wouldn't expect it to score well. Now that I know it was you, I know you've done better. The colors are blah, and I still don't like the lighting. This just isn't your best even though it managed to score so high.

Congrats, Irene. Great one. I admire your patience to get these stunning shots.

Hi Robert, no way can you use the same picture here more than once. You have to do the picture within the given dates.
I did a similar one a while back using coffee and milk. Maybe you mean that one.
Thanks for commenting.

While the timing of the capture is impressive, the coloring and the DOF make the overall impression of the shot into something rather unappetizing and unattractive.

I knew I was going to see one of these shots for this challenge, heh. I think you left your "milk shake" out too long.

I've never tried a shot like this, but I'd imagine the focus is tough to nail. Unfortunately I don't think you nailed it. The front bits are in focus, so it looks like a DOF issue. Which would mean you'd want a bigger aperture.. which means more light.. let there be more light!
