I was looking to see previous Candids and came across this. I almost cried looking at this. On a side note, I had the Nikon 995 also! I love the pivoting body ... Anyway, I can see both the young and the old woman in this image. I hope I get an image like this some day. She is beautiful beyond words.
06/23/2005 07:04:31 PM
Just wonderful. I love the softer focus and the nice lighting.
03/27/2004 08:13:02 AM
Very heartbreaking, very powerful. The lines on her face and her eyes... Dyakuyu! (I'm from Kyiv but spend more time in St. Pete now - and babushki are one of my favorite subjects... Oh, and I love Lviv and can't wait to go back there again!..)
10/11/2003 12:26:12 AM

Beautiful, absolutely beautiful. Congratulations on #1. There is so much feeling and beauty in this photograph. I wonder if this might be a record # of 10's for one photo? I'll start a thread in the forums to find out.

Please submit this at bestphoto in the People category.

You're not going to like me, that a really great shot. but ...
Another week : 10, this week 7 ( to me i's a portrait, not a 'candid moment' in the spirit, even if it is not prepared at all).
But the shot is really great. Lionel

This is one of my favorite picks for this challenge. Very nice candid that has bountiful character.
09/04/2002 09:37:00 PM
Wow. I love this shot. The detail is really nice. I'm giving you a 10. I'd love to see the orriginal high res of this. Good work - phlebotiss
09/04/2002 09:36:00 PM
Great candid.
09/04/2002 07:56:00 PM
nice capture
09/04/2002 04:36:00 PM
What an expressive face. Makes me long to hear the stories she could tell. The lighting is superb in this shot. The framing leaves me wanting to see the original. I don't care for how her body is chopped off at the left and we have that chair on the right, but it's likely the best you could do with the candid moment on the train. Stil, this is in my top ten picks for the week. 8, just-married

09/04/2002 03:37:00 PM
this shot is amazing. the framing and composition are just right and the expression/emotion portrayed through the woman's face is fantastic. 10--amitchell
09/04/2002 02:31:00 PM
Priceless capture. I like how she contrasts with the white window (?) Very nicely done. karmat
09/04/2002 12:34:00 PM
Perfect picture. This is my second favorite. Of course her face is wonderful, but I love to colors too. that green in the window frame does nice things for her eyes and the brown frames the green wall the way the plaid coat frames her green eyes, nice. I like the blob on the right too, It makes me think she's not all alone and without the abstact pressence of thta person she would be too vulnerable. I like that the window is white rather than sky colored or treed. The blank white makes a perfect baance to the dark walls and the dark coat. Lighting is perfect. 10
09/04/2002 11:32:00 AM
A strikingly beautiful shot..you captured a face that speaks volumes. Can't find any negatives except maybe a little cropping at the top of the window.
09/04/2002 11:32:00 AM
One of those shots that can live forever. The coincidence of such an incredibly strong subject, a high quality camera, the proper light and the sensitivity to capture it. It should win this week.
09/04/2002 06:04:00 AM
The age in that face is incredible. The lighting is exactly right to highlight those creases. I love the framing and composition. 10 from me! - lisae

09/04/2002 12:51:00 AM
mood captured - age, look of wisdom
sincerity of expressions - fabulous
09/04/2002 12:19:00 AM
Amazing subject. The wrinkles deepened by shadows hint to the experiences and hard times she may have lived. Good lighting and nice shot
09/04/2002 12:15:00 AM
Congrats, You really pulled this one off. There are many Candid shots in the challenge, but few that have that artistic element. (my own included). Perfect subject, you will no doubt do well with this shot. 10 Gotcha

Wow and more wow. I really like how you captured her face. This is truly wonderful. I don't really like the large amount of negative space, but I'm not going to quibble too much at this greatness. Well deserved 10. Swash

09/02/2002 11:51:00 PM
Though not allowable for this challenge, I would recommend you crop out whatever it is to the right of the picture, turn that all white. Then frame it! You have a wonderful (National Geographic) photo here.

Nice use of light!
09/02/2002 04:07:00 PM
Look at those eyes! You really captured the essence of the person here. I just wish we had a bit more of the window so as to tell the story w/o the title.

09/02/2002 12:33:00 PM
Superb photograph! I can see this (cropped a bit) on the cover of National Geographic! Great subject, expression, lighting, mood - clearly candid. Excellent!
09/02/2002 12:10:00 PM
To me, "candid" is about capturing "a moment", and you have certainly done that. I like the composition and the lighting. This is a winner for me. Wonderful shot. lhall - 10
09/02/2002 11:31:00 AM
nice image the window keeps it from being a ten 9 good shot
09/02/2002 10:55:00 AM
Wonderful composition! Excellent lighting -- how did you get the window to be pure white while keeping the proper lighting on the woman's face? This is one of the best photographs I've seen on this site in the last few months. I'd give you more than a 10 if it were available! 10+ LanSnake
