Challenge: Selective Desaturation II (Advanced Editing V)
Camera: Canon EOS-30D
Lens: Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
Location: Federal Way, WA (Seattle)
Date: May 15, 2007
Aperture: f/22
ISO: 100
Shutter: 10 sec
Galleries: Abstract, Digital Art
Date Uploaded: May 19, 2007

Originally had this thought for "Vanishing Point" (the infinite reflection was totally my wife's idea... I just added the ball), but realized that I couldn't get the horizontal line intersection from this viewpoint. I really liked the concept, so shot it for "Selective Desat" instead. Good timing - otherwise this would've been a wasted setup (and it was complicated).

A skoosh-ball suspended between 2 identical mirrors. The hard part was covering the peripheral reflections, which we did with foam-core cardboard sheets, and a black drop-cloth.

Shot with a long exposure to nail the details. The actual ball isn't even in this shot (it's off to the left)- only the reflections. Essentially - this is a pic of what I see in the mirror.

pp:
convert from RAW
rotate
crop
selective desat using channels
curves
cloned out the wire on the ball (tiny)
cloned out the wrinkles in the dropcloth
cloned out some dust and minor imperfections
resize
usm
ni
sfw

Hope this does okay - it's pretty abstract, but I like it!

Post Challenge:

Wow! Thanks everyone for the votes & the great comments :O)

Didn't expect this to do so well, but it's one of my favorite shots... so REALLY glad that it made my front page :O)

Especially nice, as this was such a loaded challenge (554 entries) and the first round of DPL... so I don't think anyone knew what to expect!

For some reason I didn't know how to rate this one, so it's one of the few I didn't vote on in this challenge. I'm glad to see others didn't have that problem! Congratulations on another ribbon for your excellent portfolio.

Nice execution and idea. The greys are a bit too warm for me (makes it look colored). Still a beautiful photo.
