What an awesome idea for this challenge! And beautifully executed, too. This reminds me of the scene from The Matrix when Neo takes the "red pill" and reaches out to touch the mirror. "You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes. "

12/31/2003 01:47:21 PM
Well ya fooled me, I wouldn't have believed that anyone would actually take a mirror that big out into the middle of no where! And I wouldn't change the ring thing either!
12/31/2003 10:07:14 AM

Thanks for everyone's comments! The great thing about this site is it challenges us to be creative and to take pictures we wouldn't normally think of taking. Even if my picture did not do well in the contest I still would have been happy because I took a picture that I really liked that I would not otherwise have taken. That said I am THRILLED at winning my first ribbon!

I woke up in the middle of the night with the idea. I got up, got out the camera/tripod and took some test shots in the dresser mirror and thought....hmm....this could work. The next day, I got out the screw driver, removed the dresser mirror (quite heavy....my wife said YOU BETTER NOT BREAK MY MIRROR) and put it in the back of my pickup. Drove around town trying to find a good background and finally decided on the fence and hill line. I thought it would give the picture a feeling of depth and also I could line up the fence and skyline in line with my hand placement.

There were several comments about the ring on my hand, yes I could have removed it but then my wife would have KILLED ME! Actually it was an oversight. I was too busy worrying about the composition that I didn't even notice the ring until I uploaded the picture at home.

Thanks again for the comments, Happy New Year to Everyone!

This was one of my favorites for the challenge. This is a great shot and I think you really captured a moving piece. Nice job. You deserved the honors. I could have done w/o the fence, but maybe you can photoshop that out for the print on your wall.
cheers ~

I like the message that this shot gives me, it reminds me to Matrix when Neo pulls his hand from the liquid mirror. B&W works well here, and I like the composition, too. Good luck. :-)

Refreshing contemporary feel, bold composition with all, subject, pose and facial expression synced to produce an artistically accomplished and convincing photograph.

The light bluish hue applied to the image aptly -uses- the strong highlights (the part of the face exposed to the sun, the grass on the far side of the fence), while appropiately adding a cold feeling as part of the minimal modernism of this shot. The dynamic energy captured and related here is as profound as it is convincing, because of an utterly persuasive manner (!) which successfully integrates all the diverse elements that make a remarkable picture.

I understand the -how-to- of this entry to be as much part of its charme as it suggests a reflection on perceived reality.

Woow! My favorit this week! Very strong very surreal and fits very good to the challenge topic.
Technically very well done: sharp, well cropped and B&W works great. Also the background is well chosen.
Acctually I can't tell for sure if you used a mirror or if there are two persons.
I like the man's (your!?) neutral expression and the sun-glasses: adds well to the surreal feeling.
For me the winner, hopefully for others too (10)

Very striking, and bold image! This photo really comes out at you. It makes the viewer wonder who is behind the hand on the left, and it forces One to focus on the model's lens for the answer. But alas, we have to look hard......or so do we think, for that hand may well be our own? Nicely done.

Why does he have a ring on? Don't understand that. Love this image except the overexposed do-dah just off his left shoulder. Wish he wasn't so dark. Maybe that's what you were looking for. Nice work though. The guy is very cool. 9.

i like this a lot, actually, i had a similar idea, but your interpretation is much better, 10... at first i didn't understand why the thumbs aren't touching, but this fact makes it more dynamic... i hope that your picture is doing better than mine, it's really low at the moment...

reminds me of the new HDTV flat screen commercials - nice idea and execution. might have wanted to spot edit that bit/speck out in front of your forehead. i also wonder if taking off the ring might have improved this in any way (much of the emphasis, for me at least, seems to be on the ring).
