Took this at the fruit stand on the side of the road on our way to our school project in Kenya. We always stop there and buy the world's best magoes, pineapples, bananas and avocados at this place where families scrape a living selling their fresh produce. This child really locked into the camera. But the mother came and yanked him away. Later on she was glad to have him pose when we bought some fruit from her.

EDIT: Some levels, sharpening, curves and noise reduction. Cloned out some distracting dirt on the face. Was of two minds whether to leave it in or not, but decided to leave it out as your eyes went there imediately. Masked and selected the mango after a desat on the face. Used an overall yellow filter to get a browner duotone.

PREDICTION: I am hoping for a 6.7 plus on this. Don't think it will get a top 10 though. Maybe finish top 20??? Let's see folks...

POST: I was so disappointed with myself that I didn't take care with my selective desat. I was in a bit of a rush and the monitor I worked on didn't show it up as bad as all my other monitors. Sorry folks, but you were right.

Thanks for all the votes and great comments. Have had a great run lately.

I think Jeff's first place and the collection of his tiget images are spectacular, so I am not too sad to miss out.

And thanks Lesley Goodman for your inspiration on this site. To be compared with you several times with this image is a great honour for me as you are one of my favourites.

POST, POST: Wow...what's going on? This is the third time this has happened to me (that someone gets dqed and I get the ribbon). It's been a great 6 weeks...a blue a red and two yellows. Now how am I gonna get my big head out of my front door??? Bad luck to JJ.

Congratulations on a well-deserved if belated ribbon. This is a stunning image - those eyes are so expressive. And it's a perfect image for selective desaturation.

Powerful portrait. You know, if people take decent photos of black kids, they always get comments that it is Lesley Goodman behind the camera. That is of course one of the best compliments anyone can hope for!

Congrats on your 4ht place!

Enzo, WOW! This is absolutelyl my favorite kind of photo, and you NAILED it! Wish it had a ribbon under it, but you can't complain with a 4th place finish in a free study, and a 7.17 score, right?

Congratulations!

not to sure about this color is good and the eyes step out at you, but it seems to lack something

To me the eyes are the focus of this and the remaining colour in the mango fights with that. Beautiful nonetheless.

This is an amazing photograph, there is an orange hightlight around the child's thumb that messes it up though. selective desat like this is really hard, I would try toning down the yellow a bit and them maybe the edges wont be so harsh. awesome capture though

The whole world is in those eyes! There are some issues you may or may not wish to address (the blue tones below the mango and the line of orange on the thumb) but the picture is a great one.

This is a wonderful pic. Gave it a 9 and faved it on the first run through.Coming back to look at it again and the only reason I dont bump it to a 10 is because of the color leaking out onto the thumb and shirt. On a quick glance it isnt noticeable, but this is an image I want to hang out and look at, so as I scrutinize it becomes very evident. If you make this a print I hope you fix that. Overall though really well caught image.

I like this very much..the only thing detracting from it for me is the slightly unnatural colouring of the fruit where it looks as if you`ve burned in or altered the highlight areas in some way ?. Maybe it`s just my monitor :-)
That aside, it`s a top pic and gets a 9 from me.
