Challenge: Painting With Light III (Basic Editing)
Camera: Pentax K100D
Lens: Sigma 18-50mm f/3.5-5.6 DC for Pentax Digital AF
Location: Bedroom in house (Queensland, Australia)
Date: Jun 3, 2007
Aperture: 32
ISO: 200
Shutter: 20
Date Uploaded: Jun 3, 2007

My first submission into a challenge and I am happy with the result. The shot was very simple but took a few hours to perfect and about 25 attempts - I was chasing the perfect shot as I have no knowledge in editing.

This shot had a sparkler set up behind the tea pot and one in the spout and was taken on a 20sec timer (camera on tri-pod) and was taken in total darkness with white boards on each side to give the reflection. The setup was very crude and makeshift but the end result looks effective.

Editing was a simple crop on the right side of the frame, resize, and that was it. Any feedback on further editing that could have been done would be greatly appreciated.

I think this shot is pretty good just the way you set it up. I don't think there is much more you need to do to "save the shot" with post processing. I think this shot was quite successful. I would be more inclined to continue experiments using variations of pyrotechniks, reflective sources and subjects or combinations of subjects. This shot has certainly given me some inspiration.

An amazing effort, breathtaking actually. I was blown away by the sparks and the teapot! I wonder what is in the teapot, is it tea or coffee? Some people perfer coffee, other tea and apparently other people like yourself perfer sparks!

This photo has breathtaking shadows and hues along with a beautiful gradient from the darkness to the lightness of the sparkles. Good effort, I would be more impressed if it were a beer bottle instead of the teapot!

thoroughly impressed that this shot is effectively straight out of the camera and is a bit of a rude awakening on a personal basis for the over reliance in saving a shot using software. the fact that you even thought of putting together sprinklers and a kettle for the perfect composition indicates you might be a bit bonkers, but by gods it is effective. very well done.

First submission? That's great. Congrats on your top 20 placement (I was one of your 10's). Great photo!

This is one of the few "bright light" images that ranked at the top for me; the use of the sparks to backlight the kettle, but also including them coming out of the spout, was perfect. Lighting and composition appropriate to the subject, this is one of my top picks of the challenge.

Cool idea ... sparklers behind the tea pot? I would have liked just a tad more light on the face of the pot, or seen the whole thing go to black as a silhouette. Looks kind of in between here. Still, one of the better shots in the challenge.

love the 'fireworks' created and the backlit pot - but the best part of the image is that there is some light on the front of the pot to add some depth

Nice capture - Really great image and very creative. I almost think the whole thing in a dark navy blue could be really cool too.

coolest one I've seen so far! Wish there was a little more variation in tones, nice effect with the small sparks of light. Might be cool to see the sparks only where the steam would come out. Like have a whole set and sparks coming out the spout and all the little tea cups.
