thanks for all the support folks. ok, the cop didnt know i was taking their pic. i did it totally stealthily holding my camera to my side and squeezed off 4 shots. 3 of them were perfectly exposed but the heads were cut off. 1 was this one. he was looking at me because i was standing there, and he just happened to look my way ..

anyway ..

I missed your picture in the vote or you would have had at least another 9. Black and white or colored the real eye catcher is the expression on the officiers face. He wants to look like a big old cop who is in control but he is amused that he & his "bad guy" are the subject of a photograph by a citizen.

I DEMAND A RECOUNT. I gave you at least 50 9's and it shows you only got 41. Errr, ...I mean, ...well, goo dplacement anyway, but you deserved better. :-)

Looks like a suppressed grin on the officer...

Interesting choices re: contrast. 6 sjgleah

I like the expression of the cop :) i am not sure if this photo is a good B&W conversion though, very bland. 6 paganini

not a pretty sight
09/08/2002 10:58:00 AM
Good shot!

Great shot. Pity about the balance which is too much on the highlight side (just me probably).
09/07/2002 04:19:00 AM
This is a great frame. I love the expression on the cop's face. I just wish it was a bit less contrasty. But I like it a lot.

good candid - overexposed 6

ah, the allmighty theme song!
09/05/2002 07:32:00 PM
Great candid. Then again, maybe you're a cop and you staged this (just joking). Love the expression on their faces. The cop obviously dreaded someone with a camera in the vicinity. 8 Journey

i like the concept of this photo .. but i wish the officer wasnt looking at the camera - i guess some things cant be controlled ... Ayme -5

He has his eyes on you, wondering what you are up to. The shot is a bit overexposed, but candid.
09/05/2002 06:14:00 AM
Great job! The look on the policeman's face is priceless! Black and white was a great choice too. 9 Kaz

quit your day job.

What can I say? I love black and white candids and this is no exception. Overexposure helps, I think. The only thing that would have made it more appealing to my eye would probably be the use of a higher ISO speed if the camera allows for it. The added noise (grain) could have helped with the mood of the photo. The cop looks like he's proud of taking the perp into custody, almost like he's smiling ang striking a heroic(ish) pose. :) Great job!

VERY NICE INDEED. It's very stark, which works perfectly for the moment captured. This is my absolute favorite pic of the week. It ENTIRELY embodies my idea of candid. The expression on the cop's face MAKES this photo. Black and white was a great decision. You should be in the top three for sure, or I'll be really disappointed. 9, just-married

In a complete aside, I'd love to see other shots you took for this challenge and any tips on how you acheived such clarity in the pic.

This is a really cool shot - very "photojournalistic". The bright white (overexposed) areas bug me though. Still, extra points for being brave enough to shoot THAT guy :o) ~indigo997

Don't think that cop was really happy about the picture. I like the high contrast in this. karmat

Oh Oh, looks like you're in trouble too! Great "chance taking"
09/04/2002 10:01:00 AM
nice shot. love the look and stance of the police officer. he standing like some kind of wild west gunslinger. the whites look blown out to me. 7 goodtimecharlee
09/04/2002 09:15:00 AM
I love this shot for the subject matter, I do not think you have properly exposed it however, the whites are washed out on the car and the bus. A lesser problem is with the dark colors on the cops uniform. Proper exposure would have received a slightly higher score.
09/04/2002 05:45:00 AM
Although this picture is over exposed, I'd still have to say it's superb. The shot has met the challenge with aplomb. The faces of the subjects are inspired and the composition is spot on. Bad exposure? Yes. Less than a ten? No… (10)

mood captured - man, how come my buddy always gets away, and I get the shaft?
sincerity of expressions - surprisingly average
09/03/2002 08:39:00 PM
Well done! I love the look on the cop's face. You were certainly at the right place at the right time for this one.

Most definitely a candid moment! The b&w is great for this shot, composition works for me. Cool shot. lhall-9

I love that the cop is looking at you in this shot.
09/03/2002 08:17:00 AM
the cop looks decidedly unhappy about this photo! Hope you didn't get in trouble. Nice capture.

a bit too bright

one of the best this week
09/02/2002 11:52:00 PM
Use of black/white "made" this picture. Color would not have worked as well here.
The look on the police officer's face = priceless
09/02/2002 08:09:00 PM
Excellent shot.. I like the black and white for sure and the blown out details actually make this cop stand out much more in this photo... he contrasts nicely with everything else in the image... good shot :) = 9 - jmsetzler
09/02/2002 05:10:00 PM
Not bad. I would have maybe cropped out the right a bit more. Good expression on the cop - too bad the guy isn't a little more interesting.
09/02/2002 04:14:00 PM
Good image. I like the look on the officers face. Only a few things distract my attention. The overpowering white on the squad car and concrete. Maybe crop 1/3 on the right and a little more contrast. Otherwise good job.
09/02/2002 03:56:00 PM
What a gutsy shot! I think that I wouldn't have had the courage to take this. The composition is great especially for a candid. I would play around with the contrast a little, though. Its a bit too bright. I think that the white police car against a white bus against a white building doesn't help much. B&W was a good choice on this also. Great job and food luck! -KrazyKat
09/02/2002 03:19:00 PM
lucky capture...great expressions...looks like that cop doesn't like you very much :P Lisa
09/02/2002 03:02:00 PM
Nicely done. The contrast is GREAT. Looks like it's going to be a very long day for one of these sujects.

The officer looks a bit peeved at the photographer! A bit overexposed, but nice catch. EDIT: Still keep coming back to this. Is it overexposed like I first thought, or did you use IR, or did you just kick up the contrast? Just to clarify, it's not detracting at all from the photo.
09/02/2002 11:05:00 AM
Effective use of black and white. Interesting to see the "good guy" in black uniform and the not-so-good-guy in a lighter color clothing! Nice capture of the moment! 9 LanSnake
09/02/2002 10:50:00 AM
I like this picture a lot. my only critique would be that it seems a bit overexposed (too white).
09/02/2002 07:02:00 AM
fat cop
09/02/2002 02:35:00 AM
officer looks friendly need to dark some of the photo like the car and background
09/02/2002 01:59:00 AM
nice picture. The cop kinda looks grumpy that your taking a picture. He's glaring right at the camera.
09/02/2002 01:29:00 AM
bad exposure bad exposure

I love the contrast here and it's candid without a doubt. Perfect timing for you:) shi
