I love going to the back of the airport runways as I did as a kid with my grandfather and Olympus OM1MD. I love the view of the planes as they pass a hundred metres over your head.

The sky was brooding on the day and I liked this image most out of the ones that I took. A little grainy, but I think that adds to the drama.

EDIT: Grayscale, Duotone, USM, Dodge and Burn, Noise Ninja. Cloned out sensor dust. Levels and more dodge and burn...not in that order - I work intuitively.

PREDICTION: I hope this will do well. 6.7XXX It probably won't be right up there and will probably get criticised for the border and the grain, perhaps even the dodge and burn...but I like it, so that's all that matters really.

POST: Yeah, Top 10...and right on with my prediction for a change. I know it wasn't technically a backside, but it was where you'd expect a 'backside' to be on a plane... :-) Thanks everyone!

Well, I didn't notice it either during the challenge but I didn't look in depth. I'm surprised it finished in tenth with all the 'trolls', dnmc Nazi's and such. You're right, it is not technically a 'backside' it's 'Underbelly' as you even stated in the photo's title. It just goes to help prove my theory that these challenges are fixed in some sort of way! };>)

I have tons of photos like this, maybe I should upload one or two. They always get rejected from JetPhotos.net for 'motive'. I'm like 'huh? - it's the showing the engines and landing gears'. That's the motive! Nice shot...

Edit - Okay, apparently I DON'T have tons of photos like yours. I guess since JetPhotos didn't like them I must have tossed them. I did find this one but it's not as good lighting nor quite the same angle. Anyway...

I've always wanted to shoot something similar, except that you did a wonderful justice to a shot from my imagination :) Simply brilliant!

Number of reasons why I never shot something from this angle.. i was too lazy, Ithaca is a small place (3-4 flights in a day), always worried if cops might put me in jail.. I don't look too American you see :)

This remembers me a shot I did in the past for a challenge, but didn't enter. I stayed for hours at the airport entrance watching the airplanes passing near my head and taking photos. That was a great time and your great photo just made me recall that. Thanks and congrats for this excellent photo.

Good job, I gave it an 8. Technically, this is the "underbelly" but there's too many technically's on this site... ;-)

Awesome image, truly. Sorry I didn't get a vote in this challenge as this would have scored high from me. Interesting that some voters were bothered by the underside/backside thing -- I wondered if that would happen. Congrats on your top ten.

Congrats, Enzo! Really dramatic. We have a similar spot at our airport, so you've inspired me to get out there. :)

fantastic lighting and level of detail. the sky is also suitably dramatic, and serves to bring out the plane in a more BAM kind of way. some of the whites feel a tad blown, but other than that, it's technically great. i love the crop, and angle of the subject. not sure the underside actually qualifies as a backside, so might have to dock you a little bit there. also, the slightly odd border doesn't seem quite committed enough to that widescreen look, but it's a minor complaint. love it muchly still.

My First Weighted Scoring System ™; composition + technical 3/3, challenge 0.75/1, post processing results 1.75/2, ooooh factor 3/3, originality 1/1 = 9.50 (rounded to 10)

Had to add this to my favorites. I can almost hear the roar of the engines and feel the wind as it passes overhead. Great postprocessing and the crop is perfect for this challenge.

Wow. Awesome point of view! I like that the photo is very contrasty. Lends to the mood of the shot... it's a powerful machine, and a powerful photo. Lovely.

I love this picture but I don't feel that the underside is the same as the backside.

I don't usually go for this kind of processing but it seems to work very well here. Don't care for the lopsided framing though. Nice job.

PS: I don't think the underside is the same as the backside... ;-)

Im not so keen on the border here but that has not influenced my score.
The processing is A1 and whilst I am at Airports 2 -3 times every week, I stuggle to find a better image of a plane than this - Top marks from me

Super applause for this image. In the challenge a lot of people seem to have gone for simply shooting 'normal' things that happen to be walking away from them. You however have really got to grips with the idea of the challenge and whatismore have produced a stunning image to boot. Lovely B&W conversion, loving the tones and contrast and the border works well One word. Brilliant.....Oh and heres another word....Ten
