Camera: Olympus E-20P
Location: The Baltimore Zoo
Date: Jan 3, 2004

Date Uploaded: Jan 3, 2004

an injured Screech Owl at the Baltimore Zoo. He was being put back into his cage by the attendent. I asked if I could take a picture. I got one chance. This was it. The original image is of the whole owl. I cropped in to accent the eyes. I did no color adjustments. Just slightly sharpened the image.

Congrats... once again! :-)

And Ursula... you're right... we did make a nice "yellow" trio up there! :-)

Congratulations again! I feel sorry for Mario, and I'm sad that the stack of three icy, wintery pictures from the Ottawa/Gatineua/Montreal area is gone from the front page, but this is a well deserved ribbon. I'm glad you got it back.

I would like to thank Langdon and the entire site council for going to the trouble of helping to validate my entry. I truly appreciate their willingness to be open to listening and making a decision that was based on sound circumstantial evidence and documented proof. I also appreciate all of the support that many of the members of DPC gave to me. As I stated, it wasn't the ribbon that was important. Mario, I am sorry that you were impacted by this. I read your remark about not caring about the ribbon as long as the contest was fair. I feel that was a very honorable thing to say. The bottom line is that we are all here for fun and to learn, but it is important to follow the rules. Again, I am sorry for all the trouble this caused. I hope that nobody was offended by anything that was said or by the outcome.

well, after all this excitement i do hope that you will visit this little owl again and see if he is feeling any better... how about it?

Thanks to everyone for your great comments and critiques. I really appreciate the time you take to give me your input. I considered this a very lucky capture. Normally it takes me many, many takes to get one I like. Maybe I should keep my eyes closed more often when I shoot!:) Thanks again, Larry

A foolish and impossible resolution :-), but a refreshingly simple and straightforward portrait of Einstein.

We've always taken the owl as a symbol of "wiseness" and you've used it nicely to illustrate your NYR. Nice and sharp where it should be and DOF was used "wisely" here.

Nicely relevant to the Challenge title. Surprisingly, the out-of-focus parts fail to direct my eye to the in-focus parts. Instead, they draw me to the edges. Hopefully, it's just me!

What detail and color! Focus on the eyes is great and I love how you've seperated this owl's from it's surroundings. I also like the way you've made the connection to the challenge theme. Original and well done! Good luck.

Excellent study (JS?). Very clear detail, although I feel that the DOF is just slightly too shallow towards the back of the head - but that's nit-picking and awesome capture. I adore that intent stare and the rich colours. [9]

Intense look on his face. Sure glad I'm not a mouse. Love the colors of his feathers. Your lens [focus] is wonderful, I can see each feather. Nice shooting. Compliments only.
