Hopefully this wont be too dark for most monitors. I didnt want to lighten it any further as I wanted to try and keep the ambient light intact. This is an older chimpanzee at the local zoo.

Love this shot! What a beautiful capture! The light is simply incredible...

WOW - Absolutely stunning shot. I love the harsh light and pink skin. The expression you captured is truly outstanding. Thank you for sharing the humanity of this beautiful creature.

What a lovely thoughtful image of a wonderful creature. Your lighting and focus are just perfect!!!
03/21/2005 03:22:32 PM
Why not sell it to the Zoo? (Not give a copy) :-)
03/24/2004 01:22:14 AM
Wow, this is fantastic. You should print a copy and give it to the zoo!

This looks awesome on my LCD monitor at home. The monitor I'm looking at right now is quite dark...and it's still awesome. Adding this to my fav's, and I'm pretty stingy about that.

You're awesome, Moody. Nice new profile pic too.

Respectfully,

Pedro

Amazing capture especially with the conditions you were in ... so rich in details and emotions ... so poignant, so wise.

Thanks for all the comments and scores. This was taken inside the chimp building behind 8 layers of ape-proof glass at the local zoo. He was hanging up in the rafters, clinging to a grated window where the sun was streaming in (no studio lighting was involved). It was shot at 300mm at iso 800.

I must admit that one of the reason that I finally join was to give this shot a "10". It's an incredible beautiful and emotional shot.

This is an unbelievable picture.
Remarkable pose. This is in my top three pictures for what I feel is a stiff competition. These are some of the best images I’ve seen on DPC. You should be proud of this. 10

WOW! What a great shot. I really like the light here. I'm assuming it is natural sunlight? Nice shadow detail. I love the expression and how the primate is examining the weeds. Good luck!!! I think this will be in the top 5 if not in the top 3.

The light glows, and those eyes have such a deep and contented expression! Raises the crumpled grass to almost religious status - I exagerate perhaps but it is very emotive. Nice composition with the corner of the eye on the thirds line and the arm reaching diagonally to the corner. The only thing I'd wish is you'd been able to come around to the left a bit more and frame the grass against the darkness. 9

very nice emotive shot. Excellent capture. great lighting and framing. I don't think I'd do anything to this one but mat it and frame it. 10

This is the essence of the perfect NG shot. Maybe you should submit it to them. Lighting is almost perfect, just a touch on the rightside cheek.Texture of the hair is incredible. You can almost feel the softness. The eyes are incredible and really shows the emotion and feeling of the chimp. This is the winner.

love the subject but the lighting looks totally staged. Juxtaposition of what seems to be studio lighting against such a beautiful "beast" just does not work
01/22/2004 10:20:30 AM
this is fantastic, the framing, the composition, light, everything. Very well done.

Ideal entry, and a great natural candid. Anthropomophic title bothers me a touch, and oh to be able to burn those eyes a little. Great moment of light though. I'll be very surprised if this doesn't ribbon.

Fantastic! How did you manage that lighting? I'm sure that required a pretty slow shutter speed, but yet nothing is blured. Very impressive. - 10

a glimmer in the eyes, and this is perfect...

te overexposed areas give definition to the dark subject. eyes are a bit on the dark side, but that glimmer would fix it i think.

my choose for 2nd place

I like this shot a lot, very subtle lighting. Almost feel it could do with a bit of fill flash on the left to bring out some more of the hair, but that might blow everything out. If you could have dodged/ burned it or used flash to bring out some more eye catchlight that would have strengthed it some more. A great capture as is and a very simple, strong composition without the background clutter.

That is what they call a hairlight. Great image, enhanced by the light which creates this special atmoshphere, peaceful, quiet, investigating.
