Challenge: Free Study 2007-07 (Advanced Editing V*)
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro
Lens: Nikon AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR
Location: England
Date: Jul 22, 2007

Nice to be back again.

Went to the zoo on Sunday and while reaching into my camera bag I looked across to the right and 'BEHOLD' I was blessed with this 'biblical' scene.

This is my first submission with the Fujifilm S5 Pro (I love this camera) I hope it does well and I can bounce back to DPC with a respectful score.

Est score - 6.4
dream score - 7.0

Shooting high with this one but it's more wishful thinking. I really LOVE the tones in this B&W shot.

Editing - shot in RAW opened in PSCS2, lucisarts filter applied slightly, curves, converted to B&W, cropped, noise ninja, resized, noise ninja again.

I use noise ninja more as a way to sharpen the image on the 2nd run, I find it does a better job on the smaller files than the USM.

Thank you.

Post result-:

WOW! that's all I can say right now.
Thank you, I'm totally gobsmacked!

I absolutely adore this photo. The tones are outstanding. And of course, I'm all about the goat. They are the most interesting creatures to me.

Congratulations on the fantastic finish!!

Now Ive had a day or 2 to re-compose myself can I just say a big THANKS to my team members for their support (not friend voting)(LOL) This was the first shot I was allowed to submit to so YES this actually is my first entry with the Fuji S5 it just happened to finish Later than the street photography shot by 2 days (a wonderful illusion).

Anyone thinking about the S5 as a Camera will be very pleased with it's performance from a colour and Dynamic Range POV, if you want speeeeed forget this camera.

RAW files over 1600 ISO appear dark when opened in most viewers and I have found that LIGHTROOM is by far the best RAW tool for these RAF RAW files, they are 25MB big too hence the fuji's SLOOOOW speed of 1.5fps, this is NOT a sports cam. It comes into it's own when shooting people, weddings, and in difficult light situations (such as this shot here, into the light from a long way away at full zoom 300mm) it had AMAZING DR. I just found out recently that this camera works so well in JPG I might not use the RAW function. The high ISO even at 3200 is stunning and leaves my D200 and also the D1s mk II Canon standing...

Anyway, I would really like the thank everybody for their comments and Favs. Some of my most favorite photographers have selected this shot as a FAV and I am totally honoured by that. The score is very good and a new PB but as I always state, I'm not really driven by scores, I like to submit what I like and the photography/editing that I like. I know some of you do not like the high dynamic range I love to shoot but that is my style and after a very over abusive start to HDR I have managed to cut my addiction down to minimal usage (LOL)

It is a pleasure to be back and a pleasure to be a member of such a wonderful online community as this is and has been for many years.

God bless you all and thank you for this very special ribbon.

Congrats, Marac. I'm happy to have been one of your 10s (one of five I gave out). It is rather biblical, now that you mention it. The tiny tree-like plants, combined with the shooting angle, make these goats seem like giants. Great job on the b&w tones.

In a quick click you've managed to capture a great story.

You did a good job framing the photo's composition, giving them room in the photo to gaze into the distance. Black and white was a good choice. When I first saw this image I got a very classic Ansel Adams feel.

One thing that is really distracting me in the photo is the little weed/tree that's sprouting on the hill. I would have cloned that out.

Oh wow, this is amazing. STUNNING. What a powerful photo. This creature (not sure what kind of animal he is?) - he's so intimidating, but he also looks old and wise... Wow. It's just lovely. Can't wait to see how this places. I hope it ribbons. ;) Good luck.

Talk about optical illusions! At first glance I thought that piece of weed/grass/brush sticking up on the far lower right was a tree in the distance. :) That's one scruffy looking goat! Fun shot. Good luck in the challenge.
