Falkirk v Ajax
Image desaturated using channel mixer.
Highlight tool used to reduce over exposure.
Image sharpened and cropped.

I truly wish I hadn`t overexposed this image as it meant I couldn`t get detail back in the highlight areas made worse by the fact that it was Basic editing and I couldn`t use burning to rectify it.
I know it`s going to get hammered for that..but it`s going in anyway.
Update
Genuinely surprised that this got anywhere near a Ribbon but also delighted that when the Challenge theme fits ..a "footy" shot can deliver.
This was my first day with the new camera body and new Sigma lens (which, incidentally is now back with Sigma being recalibrated). There was extra pressure applied by the fact that the Dutch press had asked for a few "originals" to be mailed over directly after the game.Being determined to avoid underexposure, I had the camera set for what was a predominantly dull afternoon (weatherwise.)I had to constantly monitor and occasionally alter the settings for the odd time that the sun broke through and as luck would have it, it decided to put in an appearance as I was shooting the goal and celebration..no time to stop and change, just capture and worry about it afterwards.I have to say the elation I was feeling at my team beating the Dutch Giants was more than enough to counter any worries about the exposure (at the time) but that depression kicked in the following day as I sorted through the match pics.

Got to be the worst original I`ve ever considered for a Challenge submission !!

How TOTALLY inspiring that it is possible to have a great image that may not be technically perfect and turn it into an extraordinary, award winning photo! My hat is SO off to you!! Congratulations on a very well deserved blue ribbon!

Blue ribbon? Whoo Hooo
Well deserved.
I knew that this was your shot (well hoped)
Being only 50 odd miles away i reconised the teams!
It's a fantastic capture and i hope it teaches all of us not to throw images away that are not perfect before the PP.
Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the comment Adrian..in answer to above, only a small amount of shots on the day were overexposed..so I had a large amount to choose from when selecting for the press.
I mainly shoot for the team`s website www.falkirkfc.co.uk and the matchday magazine..only very occasionally am I asked to supply the press. The whole thing is a hobby and I`m far from being a Pro.

I have shot in Raw previously and knew of it`s benefits with returning detail into blown highlights but never found much advantage to it in terms of keeping noise out of enlargements with underexposed shots but maybe that`s down to my lack of knowledge on the technical side of things..I am considering shooting in Raw once more and doing a bit of research into getting the best out my camera..hadn`t heard of DxO until you mentioned it and I`ll certainly look into that.

Thanks again.
Gordon

Gosh, Gordon - nice retouch. Well deserved result!

I wondered how the Dutch Press liked the shots - hope nothing nasty happened - you must be a seasoned pro though, so they will understand it was a technical blip.

I find with shooting Raw that I can get away with a fair bit of underexposure, and use DxO to help bring zap into flattish contrast situations - it does a better job than I can - do you have a favourite way to deal with over/under exposure?

Outstanding capture. Not only the look of elation and triumph on the victors, but the dejected look on the guy's face on the ground. Priceless!

Nice subject, composition, and capture. Feels very bright to me. Might be improved by backing down on the brightness.

I like this more on second review. I think (hope) you'll be getting a ribbon for this one. Some parts are a little too white but the important parts of the image are nicely exposed and in focus. Very nice capture.

My vote for the winner! I love it! it seems a bit too white, but it serves a purpose to make this shot unique, keep it as it is and you get my only 10!

Dunfermline against Falkirk, Falkirk win 3-0?
A little bright, but the excellent timing and superb composition easily compensate. 9
