As you might have understood from the title I was inspired to create this by the 2006 winning photo in the digital imaging competition sponsered by adobe. I did not try to copy the original in every aspect but instead attempted to make the viewer get the same impression as you get when looking at Penedo's work. Here is the link to Penedo's photo.

This was one of the most complicated photoshop images I have done. From taking the photos until I saved the final Jpeg took roughly 5 1/2 hours. This image is made up of 5 different photographs and 24 layers.

Thanks so much for all the comments. I was hoping people wouldn't blame me for being a "copy cat" (and you didn't!) I first saw penedo's image on the cover of "After Capture" magazine and was really impressed with it. I decided since I had never done much of a composite image before I would try to stretch my skills and see what I could do.

Also this is most likely the last challenge I will enter using my old 3MP fujifilm camera. (I upgraded to an SLR, lookout! lol) I was hoping to get the highest score with it on DPC but 2nd highest isn't bad. Thanks again!

I haven't seen this one before, (nor the original), but think it's brilliant.

Adding to favs and thinking of copying it.

lol .. you're very into that crazy hat and the umbrella .. BRILLIANT shot .. and congrats on an excellent score in the free study .. its such a wonderful image .. at first i was thinking you did it in an advanced edit and was wondering how on earth .. lol .. then i noticed expert .. however you've achieved this its totally brilliant .. very magritte-ish .. i love stuff that is like life but with a weird and unexpected twist .. the time spent on this was well worth it .. and to achieve a work of art in 5 1/2 hrs is quick !! .. :)

The Pinedo image immediately came to mind when I saw this entry, and I googled it to see how close they were. At first I was a tad annoyed at such blatant "copying", but then I did a reality check and said to myself, "Hey Ward, we DPCers copy EACH OTHER all the time, in the spirit of learning "how they did that", so why not do the same with an outside-DPC image?"

And you did it very well indeed, and I am delighted to see you crediting Pinedo in your notes. This is just the way it ought to be.

The Pinedo image has much more subtle modeling on the umbrellas, and I prefer that, but regardless this is a compelling image; congrats on your top-20!

Not a bad reproduction. Congrats on your personal best and BIG PROPS for crediting the real author of the idea. I wish more people had your honesty.

O.K. I was intrigued, so I googled O Vento by Wendell Penedo. I must say you did a bang up job on the tribute! With the exception of the change of stance, object the man holds, ruffled umbrellas, and featureless sky you really capture the surreal mood and feel that that is present in Penedo's image. My critiques on this piece is that I wish you stayed with a clean line sharp-edged umbrella rather than the ruffled edges because it just gives a nice clean lines to the overall image especially when you have the repeated umbrellas that are further away because the out of focus look gives them a ragged pieces taken out of them look. Next is that it seems to much of an unnatural (not to mention uncomfortable) stance that the man is holding up the umbrella that high. Bringing down the arm to a more comfortable level would make it seem less awkward and thus a bit more natural.

Back to comment: A very tasteful tribute to Penedo. Love that you didn't try to copy every detail, but instead, made it your own. Great idea, well executed. Faved.

Nice shot - Like the tones - good PP work - Like the out of focus ones. The only brolly that looks a little too staged and not with the others is the very first one on the left - Seems too harsh and distracting

The Focal Range in this Photograph is incrdible.
Lighting is pristine and those muted colors really pop the umbrellas
A job well done
