I was with one of my company's crews; I am a television producer, doing an episode from a program under production called "Having Fun" and the episode was about hiking.
My youngest daughter, Maysoon 20, had my camera with her and she was documenting the production with still photos. I was very busy working and watching the Director giving instruction to the presenter of the show on how he wanted him to conclude the episode; taking a dip in the cool water. While afar we had few kids swimming in the background, the water is only 4 feet deep; I then noticed my son claiming the only rock in the middle of the pond and that the Sun had made a majestic appearance through the narrow gorge casting stunning volume light, which usually lasts for few minutes.
I turned to my daughter Maysoon and quickly grabbed the camera pointed and took the first and only frame; I tried to release the shutter again but the battery was flat dead; I did think then it was a nice capture from the view finder but that was not possible to verify for another day or so.
At that time I went back to finishing up the work thinking, how? Just how could the battery go dead now??!! I mean just few more frames!! GRRRR!! I could not believe it, but what could I have done no spare. End of story.
And the only frame is the one you saw, thank you all very much. A strike of luck I guess.

What a story - amazing, and to think you had one go at it, shows your talent.

When I look at this photo, I think to myself, how can anyone give this less than a 10, but you got them, as hard as it is to believe that this deserves anything less. It would be astonishing indeed to ever see anything on DPC get at least a 9 average!

The light and the splashes puts this image in the category of the divine shots. Technically you did a great job with the foreground and background light while the composition was already there just waiting for you to shoot your camera. The natural triangular frame does a great job pushing our attention to the main scene and subtracting any distracting element that could weak the image. The word that I usually use to describe pictures like this, is "perfect". Congrats for this stunning image.

This is a beautiful shot, having seen it I would certainly have voted a 9 or a 10... I don't quite see the urban landscape but that's not really what counts. A beatiful photo in every respect and a well worthy second place! Well done!

Congratulations on a red ribbon!

Edit: I just noticed this is your first ribbon! Even more congratulations then!! But I'm sure ribbons will be gracing your profile page in multiples before long!

Love the picture. I just wish it were more of a rural landscape.

08/17/2007 04:25:31 PM
I really have a dilemma with this as it really doesn't technically fit the description of rural. A truly awesome composition and capture and a wonderful scene. I'm giving it a 6 because of it, though in a Free Study I'd have gone higher. The 6 is strictly on the shot's merits but IMNSHO, DNMC.

Upon reflection, and being honest, it's no less rural than my entry, and in the spirit of fair play, you talented b*stard, I'm bumping this to an 8.

If I could tie this to the challenge topic more readily, then it would be a 10 for sure. As it is, I'm stretching the limits of my own rules by giving it a 7. Beautiful image.
