So this week I was working at Alameda Point, an old Navy base in next Oakland. This is the same place where they film some of Mythbusters, like the wood cannon and car stuff. It has an old runway there also where I was working. Anyway as you drive in they have this plane, which is full scale built on this post that says "Fly Navy". I wanted to find an angle to hide the pole so it looked like it was flying but the nose was up to high, I cut off the Navy part so I could get rid of the buildings in the foreground. Converted from Raw twice, once for plane and once for clouds. Masked out the plane and did color for the sky, using levels, selective color and hue/saturation Layers, Tried dodging and burning the sky, but I think I need practice in color. The plane was lit by two yellow lights built into the grounds.

Wow! This is amazing. It sounds from reading your description that you turned this into a wow photo with exquisite positioning and processing. You did a fantastic job. It does look like its flying! It's stunning!

I think the processing is just fine - really works well to give this a feeling of flight when it's obviously stationary. And it's just a wee bit phallic. :-)

This is underrated, Maybe the sign that says fly bothered some, it would have been better without it, but its'hard to clone out, good composition.

Excellent, Joe! How many requests for validation? :) I lived in Alameda for a few years as a kid and was stationed near there through most of the late 80's (Mare Island). I also watch Mythbusters all the time - great show. This is a spectacular job on this. Lots of competition though. And yes, it's a "Man" photo. :D

10 - very very dramatic, I love it! And the "fly" just gives it that final touch.

How cool does that look! A model plane I'm guessing? Really neat looking sky too.

Excellently composed photo. I love the angle in which you shot this for it looks like the nose of the plane is coming right at you. The 'gradiant' of the light sky blue that spans forth into the darker shade gives me the visual illusion of movement which helps aid in the feeling that this warcraft is going to fly directly over us in any moment. The stand that it rests on disspells the illusion but only for a moment for when the eye sees the word "Fly" it instantly captures the feeling and motion in this capture. Top notch work here - 10.

Aha, FLY NAVY! I went to Alameda late last year for work, and took a few shots of this baby. I love your sky. What's your lighting? 2 off-camera flashes? I don't remember there being any floodlights on this plane, but maybe there are.
