Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Fill the Frame III (Advanced Editing V)
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Sigma 100-300mm F/4.0 EX IF HSM for Nikon
Location: Melbourne Zoo
Date: Aug 27, 2007
Aperture: F5.6
ISO: 800
Shutter: 1/80
Galleries: Animals, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Aug 26, 2007

THE SHOT: Got to the zoo when it opened on a most beautiful morning. The light was wonderful. Tigers came out and explored and played, so I shot around 250 images.

THE EDIT: I like this one for the contrast and duotone. Basically: grayscale, duotone, USM, some dodge and burn. Contrats, Levels...not in that order. I duplicated a layer and made it yellowish sepia from which I was able to use a layer mask for the eyes.

PREDICTION: Not sure...won't guess on this one. High hopes though

POST CHALLENGE: Wow, a total surprise to get an honourable mention! Thanks everyone...

I really should have cropped closer, and yes, the selective desat worked for some and not for others. I like it. I literally got this in with a couple of minutes to spare

ON THE DISQUALIFICATION: I don't understand it...perhaps my burning on the sides was too much, but that's photography. I am really disappointed. My first dq in 18 months...sucks to be me at the moment.
Disqualification Details
You may not use ANY editing tool to move, remove or duplicate any element of your photograph that would change a typical viewer's description of the photograph (aside from color), even if the tool is otherwise legal, and regardless of whether you intended the change when the photograph was taken.

Comparing this side by side to your original, I just cant see why this would be dq'ed.

how is this different from using a really heavy vignetting?

i'm very confused at the moment as well...still...your talent as a photographer is not in question, VERY nice image.

Dang Enzo!!! Makes you kinda confused about what's okay and what isn't, huh? I have been rather paranoid ever since my dq over what I swear was less editing than I did in a ribbon winning basic editing challenge where I used the same technique!!

I'm sorry this got dq'd !!!!

Sometimes the DQ process just isn't consitant, it's unfair and confusing...sorry man

That's a bummer about the DQ, Enzo. No matter what, it's still a great image.

I didn't vote in the challenge b/c I entered it but when I looked through this is the one that caught my eye. Such an awsome shot and great PP. Could have easily ribboned imo!

How cool is this, Enzo? It was a tough field, ordinarily this would have been in the top three. Congratulations on top 5, it's a stunning image.

I would of cropped it more to make sure it filled the frame... just in case because this is a superb photo.

good shot, nice tones. don't like the selective desat, though

Great shot but for me, the selective desat takes it from powerful to a more...cheesy...feeling, for lack of a better word. Gimmicky maybe. I'm sure the majority of the voters will dig it, though. :)

Brilliant. Doesn't quite fill the frame but good enough to meet the challenge. I'm wondering if this is selective desat or not. Either way it's wonderful.
