Challenge: Working Without a Net (Basic Editing)
Collection: Challenges 2007
Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel
Lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
Location: Iraq
Date: Aug 24, 2007

These guys aren't really outside of the wire at this point - this is the scene I see at breakfast every morning and I love the light and the dust that time of day. But the guys in these Humvees DO go outside the wire, on a regular basis, without a net. (There's a literal "without a net" here, too, that I didn't notice when I took the shot. The Humvees usually have camoflauge netting over the gunner - not just to help with the sunshine, but to deflect grenades dropped from bridges. This one doesn't have the netting in place at the moment.)

Hopefully no one will take offense. Not meant to be a statement of any kind - just recording what I see.

Great documentary sort of shot with attractive color tones - I can feel the dust. Love the gradient in the sky. Excellent score too - you seem to be rackin' 'em up these days sister!

Be safe my friend.

About as without a net as one could possibly be, although I suppose that could be said regardless of which side of the wire you happened to be on in this location. Perfect for the challenge. I especially like that bright disc of a sun dominating the landscape.

Great finish but I hate you being there to take that shot. ;~(

A perfect, timely example of working without a net. The barbed wire in silhouette really hammers home the message. Also, the big bright sun in the background strongly emphasizes the heat of the working environment. As usual, Deb, there are so many interesting details to browse thru here.

Deb - this ended up doing quite well - and I'm not surprised. An excellent piece of photojournalism.

Excellent shot and great backlighting - I would have voted higher if the foreground was a little lighter

I came back to this photo a couple of times and changed my vote each time, bumping it up. I think this is very powerful and completely captures this challenge! 10 for me!

If this is where I think it is I should give you a 10 for just being there. It's a decent shot but I give you a higher score for the creativity of it. 7

A compelling photo. I think the tangled razor wire in the foreground creates a sense of foreboding. Nice colours - Hope it does well for you.

good photo, backlit without silhouetting or totally blowing out the sky. 9

I really like this shot! First it's a beatiful shot with great colors and composition. More inportantly is how well this fits in the challenge! I can't think of a better way of expressing the true meaning of the challenge than you did w/ this shot! Men and Women in the armed services defintly work w/o a net everyday. Well done!

Some level adjustment could make the truck stand out further. Which part is the net btw?

You might want to try some HDR technique here. The dynamic range is pretty wide. Solid image even as is tho.

Nice shot. While the sun glare is massive, it is still an emotive shot. 8

Is that the real size of the sun in this picture?

I won't vote since we discussed this in the team thread, but I think this is a powerful, emotive shot that captures the chaos in Iraq along with the blazing sun. Nice final version!
