Challenge: Impressionism II (Advanced Editing V*)
Collection: Blur
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) for Nikon
Location: Neighborhood pool
Date: Sep 3, 2007
Aperture: 9.5
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/180s
Galleries: Blur, Photo-Impressionism
Date Uploaded: Sep 5, 2007

Done in-camera at our neighborhood pool. For those who can't see what it is, there's a woman and a man on the right looking out over the pool. The blue/white and red lines are separators between lanes where people swim laps.

I put vaseline on a UV filter with visible strokes. WAY too thick - couldn't see anything but a blurred mess. Then I wiped off most of it and got this.

Editing was pretty simple - mostly USM to enhance contrast (a very useful trick) and a hue/sat layer with saturation +66. Pushing it that high yielded some ugly sharp color edges, so I blurred those a bit. No filters to make it look like a painting.

This is stunning, and way underrated. You've achieved a lovely watercolor effect that fits the challenge perfectly.

I loved the fact this was done al'naturale. Very cool scene and the color pallette is amazing.

One of my favorites for the challenge - excellent abstraction, lively colors. Modernist impressionism, well done!

Hey, Jeffery, I tried exactly the same thing -- vaseline on a UV filter shooting sunbathers at the beach. I had exactly the same experience -- couldn't see a thing except the vaseline. I kept wiping and shooting. BUT I never did get a good shot from it. There lies the big difference in our photography. You got a marvelous shot. Congratulations.

well done, jeffrey. this is super, and it makes it extra good that no ps filters were used.

Jeff - This was so completely underappreciated. I really thought it was brilliantly done. I gave you a 10 for the vibrancy of the colors, the compositin and the fantastic impressionistic feel.

I didn't vote, I just was too disappointed overall, but this is very beautiful, and very much the kind of thing I was hoping to see a lot more of in the challenge.

Excellent use of in-camera technique. I gave you a 7 and that was too low.

I love the colors and patterns in this, and the woman in the chair holds your interest and provides a focal point for the composition. Gave you a 10 (just back to comment)

Wow. How did you do this? This certainly evokes Impressionist paintings.

Interesting...but, I am having a hard time distinguishing what I am looking at. My feeling about impressionism, is you are able to recognize the subject...it just has a lot of texture and brush strokes.

Nice color and lightness but too abstract for me

The blur is so effective in this shot...as are the super saturated colors...I can hardly look away. With out this treatment, done in cam or not I just know this wouldn't be nearly such a pleasing scene...very nice.

this is just so well done - the colors so vibrant and the lines so appealing - a work of art

Jeffrey - I think you are getting robbed if you have a low score on this. Passing by I think it looks a lot like the scenes of Paris sidewalk cafes. I wish I could vote - I'd give you an 8, I think.
