I've always loved this image.

Without any fancy lights, a backdrop, or a smoke machine I had to with flashlights, a piece of black felt, and candles. :) A big thanks to my dad for patiently helping out with everything, holding the flashlight, and lighting and blowing out the candles.
I'm not really satisfied with it - I didn't get close enough in shooting and had to crop a lot... so the quality isn't all that splendid. And plus the butterfly, which I taped to the iron, wasn't really behaving itself. But it helps me appreciate how difficult it is to get a perfect shot. You have to shoot, and re-shoot, and re-shoot...

some of the editing steps involved: desaturation, selective color, contrast, sharpening, burning and dodging, and a little clone stamp.

Here were some of the other that I considered trying:
makes me smile every time. Lol!
should've at least tried that one... beautiful.

Hello from the Critique Club

First off - this is a great image to be proud of (even if not original)! First impressions are good - technicals are sound and you have caught the likeness well.

I only have minor constructive criticisms to make.

In terms of a copy, it does well. You have not quite got the luminescence of the butterfly from the original.

Minor nitpicks are that there are some odd circles in your steam on the left (too big for dust spots?) and there is some softness in the lower part of the iron. Your iron is a little less engaging in its hole pattern, and the steam has an odd look - the blurring is not quite right - either to fast or too slow a shutter speed perhaps.

Overall, a really good image that placed well as a result.

Cheers

Matthew

I guess it's a dead butterfly like the original making it easy to get the butterfly on the same spot as the original. Good job even though the iron, steam and butterfly positioning aren't quite the same.

Wow, this REALLY emulates the original. Catching a good steam pattern must be a bear, but you did nicely on this one. Colors and lighting are wonderful. The orange hues of the butterfly really pops off the predominately black background.

Very nice re-make of the original...the smoke effect seems a little distorted in upper areas IMHO but well done! *7*

This is about as close to the original as any in the challenge. The tones are dead-on. congratulations.

i like it. wish the butterfly were more open, but i'm sure he wasn't the most cooperative model.
