This is my wife's Melaphone. It is a marching french horn. When I met her and saw this horn, I have ever since been fascinated by it. I haven't spent as much time with the other challenges as I did with this one, so, hope it turns out a little better than the others. We'll see. Having fun though.

I shot this my family room with lights on all sides to provide some reflections suited to identify all parts of the instrument without drowing out the subjects. I laid the Melaphone on the case and placed a sheet of music on the case.

The main subjects being the bell of the Melaphone because this is what sets it apart from a trumpet. The music shows complex detail and I liked especially the F HORN title that indicates the Key of F that the Melaphone uses as does the french horn. Hence, the "marching french horn".

I had quite a fiew background items that were cloned and some spot editing for flares and scratches, I'm not sure a like the reflection and how it turned out, but it's at least not distracting. +1/3 Exposure Compensation, Vivid, WB Tungsten camera settings.

Thanks to everyone and their comments. I will take the suggestions and use them. The DOF on the valves is the most commented item and I'm going to try the shot again with the valves in focus. The hard part about that though, because I had tried a little bit of that already, the Melophone is so long (longer than a trumpet, the DOF was hard to acquire with the notes out of focus and to even tell what kind of instrument it was.

I was trying to show the uniqueness of the instrument, rather than the common valves seen on most instruments. I'll have to try another angle or something.

Thanks again for the comments. They are greatly appreciated.

Nice shot and composition. I also like the reflections from the bell onto the sheet music. Great job. I just find the reflection in the bell a bit distracting (greenish blob). 8.

I like this shot. I would like to see a tighter crop to loose the brightness on the upper right of the bell. The leading lines are fun in this shot. I also appreciate the simpleness of the black with the white sheet music. 8 -danny

IMHO the focal point is in the wrong place for this shot. The horn is a distraction. If the focus was on the valves and the sheet music was OOF it would make more sense to this viewer!

This is just great, well thought out and an excellent use of shallow DOF. I hope this one wins, or at least ribbons!

took me awhile to figure out what the object was, until I read the sheet music.
I wonder how it would have looked if a Valve was in focus instead of the sheet music

Nice shot but I find the picture confusing to my eye due to the objects in front being out of focus rather than those at the back...
