Thank you all very much for your kind comments (and votes!) - they mean a lot to me. This is a really good website you have here - I'm having a ball and learning more about photography than from any other thing I've tried.

The picture is of our 12 year old female german shepherd Clover. She's deaf as a post, ricketty with arthritus, thinks she's human, and the best mate you could ever ask for. We love her to bits.

As for the photo - I was out in the yard playing with my new 85mm f/1.8 when something caught her attention. I quickly hit the ground and snapped off this shot. 2 seconds later she was up and gone. So I think this photo was more luck than planning and skill.

Very well done, welcome to DPC and congrats on an amazing first entry. Love the DOF, the color and the expression on your dogs face. Such a calm leadership feel to the expression. Very nicely composed. Congrats on top 10!!

Ohmygoodness! What a noble, grand portrait of that beautiful animal! Congratulations on capturing this amazing photo. The top 10 finish is great too -- but you will treasure this photo long after the challenge is gone and forgotten!

What a beautiful dog portrait! I just would have cropped out the left side a little. The vertical reddish line is distracting. 9

Great shot, nearly perfect, I'd have cropped the red pole out, but I'm nit-picking- 9

He's so pretty! There does appear to be a gothic glow action type effect on this, hopefully you did it in camera! Hope you'll post how so the rest of us can learn :-)

Gorgeous shot. My only (very slight) criticism is that I think the image could have been even stronger if the bottom had been cropped a bit more - the light green blob in the bottom right is a bit distracting. Still, this is beautiful work, and one of my top picks for this challenge. 9

Outstanding dog portrait. Especially impressed because this is not one of the "softer" dog breeds.

(Might try retaking this without the collar on, as the sharpness of the collar and the especially the tags detracts from the overall softness.)
