Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Searching (Advanced Editing V)
Camera: Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT
Lens: Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) for Canon
Location: Paradeplatz, Zurich
Date: Oct 6, 2007
Aperture: f32
ISO: 100
Shutter: 0.5s
Galleries: Urban, Emotive
Date Uploaded: Oct 6, 2007

This was meant to be a double reference to the challenge topic with both the two subjects searching for each other in this very moment and also the bigger picture of the search for "the right one", an episode of which this blind date is.

I actually wanted to do this in a different location with more people. Unfortunately, they didn't move enough and so there were too many "unblurred" people distracting from the main subjects. And hiring a crowd would have been a bit over the top. ;-)

I tried different exposures ranging from 0.3s to 2s. My models had to hold very still (that's the secret, they're not edited in).

Processing:
conversion from raw
HDR tonemapping in Photomatix to increase dynamic range
selective desaturation
selective Gaussian blur
some burning
crop
resize
sharpen
border

Thanks a lot to Sandy and Georg for being so patient and for walking several miles to find the perfect location! And thanks to all of you for the votes and the comments.

P.S.: The one time you *want* people to walk into your shot, they get extremely considerate and stop at the edge of the frame! ;-)

Nice idea and well shot... I know exactly what you mean about people doing that in this kind of photo - i had one shot dead on looking perfect with people moving around, and then one person decided to stop dead waiting for me to take the photo... not realising they were: 1)in the photo and 2)it was being taken!! Ah well, you pulled this one off with great result, congrats :)

I really like this one. Beyond the amusing and graphic take on an unusual instance of "searching", the entire gestalt of the image is unusual. There's a sense of a perfectly flat plane that encompasses everything but the BG building (to a certain extent) and the figures of the searchers, who almost appear to be levitating above this plane, and yet perhaps about to sink into it.

A very intriguing image on several levels. Great job!

Nice. I like the idea of two strangers looking for each other in a crowd, yet only we can tell how close they are due to the isolation the photos brings.
