This is Emily (so named by Laine). One of my receptionists found her in front of the office this week. Sometimes life just smiles at you. What are the odds of finding a mantis during macro week? (I've only ever seen about five of them, although perhaps they are more common here in SW Washington compared to Seattle.)

I took her home and put her in a 10-gallon aquarium and she has been happily living there chowing on grasshoppers we find in the yard. When I first put her in, I found two grasshoppers, threw them in, and went out to look for more. In three minutes I came back and she had already caught one.

The neat thing about mantises is they really don't fly much and they don't move so fast. I could take her outside for a photoshoot and not worry much about her flying away.

The red is a leaf and the blue is actually my dad's blue sweatshirt while he was holding a hold reflector.

I've got some hopes for this one, but we'll see. I'd be happy with a Top 10.

POST: Nice. I wasn't confident at all in my score. I thought 4th or 5th was more like it. Good to see freakin get his first ribbon too. Well deserved.

I am currently on vacation in California and I did let Emily go the day before we left. She earned it after her wonderful photo shoots. Hopefully she keeps away from the mean birds around here.

Wow! I have been away in the USA Jason, so I never got to vote, but you are right...sometimes life does smile at you. I see you are in Californina, so was I. I was in SanDiego and Newport Beach (also Portland OR). Pity we didn't get to bump into each other :-)

Great image, love the background colour, congrats on another ribbon

First thing I thought of when I saw the pic was the fantastic BG of the sky behind the red-orange poppy. Heh. I was fooled and I'm OK with that!

helluva shot doc!

Cool shot Doc! Congratulations on the ribbon :)

The color of the mantis is great but I think the background color and contrast compete too much with the scene. A little distracting it is.

Well, stunning photo. Congratulations.
What are the odds of finding a mantis during macro week? I found two on the same hedge, and didn't have to try the ol' dragonfly shoot. ;-)
