this was shot for a Richmond Times-Dispatch story about an interactive multi-media exhibit that is was in Richmond. The goal of the exhibit is to raise awareness about the devastation the disease is causing in Africa. Visitors pick one of four paths to follow that leads them through the lives of a child who is affected by AIDs. Only at the end does the traveller find out if the child they followed tested positive or negative for HIV. This was a very powerful experience for me, and a real-world challenge as well. I had to capture an image that would illustrate the exhibit. I'm very proud of the image, and was glad to see it above the fold on B1, Saturday, October 20, 2007.

Skip - I am so happy this did so well in the challenge. A remarkable image and worthy of the first page (actually worth of a cover of a newspaper or news magazine). This was my favorite in the challenge for the story told.

Skip, one of my challenge faves here. Very compelling. Hard to beat those fires at the moment though. Ofcourse, I can't tell you anything you don't know. Congrats on the top 5. Let's get Brad DQ'd ;-)

great shot. Wonderful use of layers to tell a story. As with my other ribbon picks, this photo is beautiful regardless of the challenge. But it also fits the challenge perfectly. I could easily imagine this in a weekly news magazing or the cover of the Times (not that this story would make the cover of the Times, sadly).

a story that needs to be told. I'm not 100% sure I'd have used this particular image to tell it but it's a very good photo nonetheless

We are compelled to look past the door and into her eyes. This is the type of shot that sells newspapers. I love the split division of field and the contrast of the images on either side os the door. The tones and colour are (I feel anyway) right for the shot and work well for me. You have a great shot on your hands to tell the story you have started. Best of luck. I think that this should make the top 10 or better.

Didn't realize aids in africa was any sort of secret or being kept quiet, but nice shot.

I think you captured a powerful image, however there is just no pain or suffering in your image. Let me explain. I believe having AIDS in Africa is a huge ordeal, yet the girl is sitting with head phones, not even seeming to have a care in the world. I think if she was more involved with the shot it would be better. I think you picked a great topic however, and I really do like the shot. Nice work.

hmmm it's kind of dificult to buy that the nice looking black girl with stereo headphones simbolices either africa or a victim of aids.
