Challenge: Textures II (Basic Editing I)
Camera: Canon PowerShot A70
Location: Flower garden outside my apartment building
Date: Feb 15, 2004
Aperture: 8.0
ISO: auto
Shutter: 1/160
Galleries: Nature, Macro
Date Uploaded: Feb 15, 2004

There is a retaining / decorative wall surrounding some of the landscaping where I live, constructed of 12x12 square timbers of varous lengths. This image is looking down at the top surface at a slight angle of one of the timbers. Taken with a tripod, set on macro, and zoomed. The picture was not cropped -- just slight adjustment on levels and framed. My first ever entry!

Beautiful image, with some wonderful texture and form too. Only downside is the soft focus and the harsh lighting - I think with some warm golden afternoon light this could be lifted from good to great.

Great shot, nice compositon and interesting shadows that increase the sense of texture.

I think this is a good balanced composition. The shadows definitely add some interest, though it is almost too "straight" on for me. Maybe a slightly lower perspective would bring out some more of the details.

Needs a leaf or snail etc to give some depth and added interest. Good hard textures still ;)

I love the lighting and the off-centered view of this. Great show of texture.

Nicely photographed and meets the Challenge. The offset center of interest is good. The monochromatic take works, but to add interest you might consider introducing a different shape into the composition. Love the detail you captured.

The best composed of the concentric rings shots that I've seen so far. Good sense of texture, especially where the light becomes more shallow toward the right of frame - I think to really communicate the feel of the wood you could have used a shallower angle of light throughout the image, perhaps, as right on the edge of frame you've really caught it, just a bit too far out of frame to really focus the attention there. Good toning and detail.

The circular composition of the tree trunk makes your eyes follow the rings toward the center of the subject. The cropping you chose makes this shot very interesting. Lighting really makes this shot pop especially with the great shadows that fall on the rings themselves. "10"

Very interesting texture, and nice that you didn't just center it in the frame. Good job! 8

The texture is here. The subject and composition don't hold my interest.

Several similar images in this challenge. Texture is very clear, composition also appealing.

Great textures. I like how the lighting/shadows increase the effect of the textures. Focus and clarity are really good, and I like where you have placed this within the frame. The dark space in the upper right is a slight distraction because it is way darker than the rest of the shot, it draws attention to itself. otherwise really nice. ~Heather~

I would feel it more if the contrast were not so pronounced - some additional lighting or a higher angle of lighting would do this. Still, it's a well observed portrait.
