I'll agree with your assessment that this does seem like a snapshot, but I can also see why you took it. As an avid reader, and one who worries that the artform of reading is losing out to video games and such, I find this a compelling sight. As a photograph, maybe it needs more context (which I prefer), or less (for DPC purposes). I do like your choice to "gray" out the background a bit - I've been trying that lately as well.

A snapshot, but doesn't come across as a serious shot aimed at a competition of this number.

Perhaps it may have worked to move the boy under a tree or shade of some sort to reduce the harsh lighting and also to remove the 1/2 person and other person and distractions in the background.
