Thank you all for the staggering amount of comments. It’s been SO interesting to see the strong reactions to this photo. The love/hate responses are exciting to me as an artist. Many have puzzled over the processing. Originally, I was in such a hurry to submit this that I did so without notes.

So here’s what I did:

Rotate, crop, adjusted light/dark with levels, resized.

Applied levels again, ran Lucis Art Exposure filter, then Perfectum filter over that. The effect you see is basically from the combination of those two filters.

I did a bit of USM, decreased brightness and increased saturation with Hue/Sat.

Copied a light color from the front guy’s face and painted the blown out forehead and cheeks. Copied a light color from the floor and painted the blown out parts of the light shining on the floor.

Smart sharpen, last level adjustment layer, saved for web.

This is really cool, but is it a photo or art. Then again these two medias converging quite a bit. Who really cares, I'll just call it "Visual Perception".

This is superb. I love it. It would be cool to see the original file too to compare but that may be just me as I'm really a newb to Lucisarts.

Wow, this is a cool composition. Makes me think of a coffee house, art center, art deco, and neon lights combined. A very cool, hip, artsy place to hang out, have a cup of coffee and enjoy the art and/or literature in this coffee house. Love the bold colors that pop visually. The striking differences in contrast between light and shadow give it distinctive look that is both appealing and takes on the appearance of a painting. Nice work.

Great image, don't ever let the critics disolve your artistic approach. We need more people who are looking from the outside in here at DPC.

hey alicia ..
well i was wondering which image you put in that was getting ppl so divided about .. and i can see why .. you may'v travelled very close to the line with the processing on this but i'm glad it was allowed .. its a very interesting image .. i love all the amazing colours and the shiny look from the perfectum .. the scene really lends itself to this process .. well done on a 6.14 in the free study .. i read a lot of the comments, it took me most of the night !!!!! .. but i've gotta say i actually like the last guy with his face so indistinct .. interesting how different ppl like different things ...
i'm waiting to go pick up ali from a party .. its nearly the midnight hour here in oz .. keep well .. :)x

This is awesome. I really like the effect here. I'm happy to see that the voters appreciated it as well. Nice score. It's a lovely scene, and brilliantly processed.

Alicia - I loved seeing this in the FS. I was voting on pics and then this just popped out. Actually, popped is the word I was looking for because this looks like pop-art. I love it!

Alicia

I have to say that this is not to my personal tastes BUT I can still appreciate what a fantastic job that you did on it. I have to say that digital art does tend to get hammered in challenges so the fact that it scored 6.1 in a FS is pretty damn amazing

Interesting way to edit the shot.. not my style, but only because I don't know how to do it myself :) 8

Definitely art, but is it still photography? Looks great, anyway.

Interesting processing. I like the colors and the composition, but still I think this is overdone a bit.

Compositionally I think this works very well however I feel the processing is over done.

I really like your processing. Not much like a photo but retains just enough to keep it out of the truly digital art realm. I'll be checking to see if you provide details on the processing as I am interested. 7

I like the technique you used -- good selection of photos to apply it to as the colors lend themselves to it. I hope you've commented on what you did to achieve this.

Good scene, but your 'effects' make this too digital art for photography. I doubt it will be allowed by the rules.

The visual affect is very unusual, but works well there. This is an interesting slice of life, with strong colors.

I'm wondering how you did this.

hmmmm...At first I was not sure what to think of this photo, I guess because it was somewhat unexpected in style. Subject wise it at first seems rather boring or mundane but for some reason I keep wanting to look at (i guess it is the 'hyper-realistic' style of the post processing). I am currently giving it a 9, but I may raise that to a 10 but I want to come back and look at this photo again in a couple of days and see if it is still intriguing to look at.

wow, i really like this effect - not usually a fan of too heavy PS "effects", but this creates a wonderful graphic comic book-esque style without looking like a standard inappropriate ps effect. only slight concern is the lask of detail in the last guy's face.
will be very interested to see you editing steps later

Doesn't look much like a photograph, but I guess that is the point of the processing. I do like the picture -- nice composition, light, and color. The bright blue highlight on the floor draws my attention away from the rest of the scene.

Nice colorful photo, I wish that I could see it without the filter/HDR? painterly effect. Brings back memories of my days in South Africa were I used to spend Sunday mornings having breakfast and reading the newspaper while I waited for my film to be processed at the local lab. Good luck. 6

I bet you're getting slammed for the processing! Not really my cup of tea but it does look cool. I can picture a big print of this on a cafe wall or something, good work

Hi Alicia, I recognise this from the Slice of Life challenge so I can't vote - just comment only - GRIN!

Although I think the processing is extreme I think due to the amazing colours of the setting that it works REALLY WELL. I'm a bit bummed by the loss of the man's face at the back, otherwise - very cool!
