This is Alasdair Richmond, a much beloved philosophy lecturer at Edinburgh University.

The original picture was quite badly overexposed, but turned out pretty nicely in B&W with a bit of tweaking of exposure levels etc. during RAW conversion.

Editing steps: minor cloning and healing brush, channel mixer, levels, brightness/contrast, dodge/burn, numerous soft light layers to make the shadows more interesting (the original lighting was pretty bad).

What makes this work for me is the warmth in his eyes. At 1/30th of a second, it's hard to get a sharp image, even with a tripod when you're shooting people - the darn things breathe and move and stuff. That said, I think you did a great job with this in post to get a very nice portrait!

The forehead and noselooks to have some blownout highlights and the picture seems to be a biy oof.
