Challenge: Duotones III (Advanced Editing V)
Camera: Nikon D80
Lens: Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5- 5.6G ED DX
Location: Littleton, CO
Date: Nov 11, 2007
Aperture: 1.8
ISO: 125
Shutter: 1/100
Galleries: Animals, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Nov 11, 2007

Because Sorcha is gray and has these great luminous green eyes, she always photographs well in black and white. So I figured she was my best shot at a quick Duotone entry. I coaxed her out onto the balcony where the light was good, and snapped what I could. She wasn't quite in the mood to model, and here she's giving me an earful on the subject.

The basics:
Gradient map using black and a very light orange
Second gradient map in b/w to desaturate
various hue tweaks
shadow/highlight
dodging and burning
gothic glow layer, fill 50%
channel mixer in monochrome, pull back red, bump green
selective sharpening on eyes and ears, background layer only
crop, resize, flatten
more selective sharpening on eyes
save for web

Post-challenge:
I entered this one because I cracked up every time I looked at it, honestly. I don't normally enter cat shots, but this one cracks me up, even a week later. I'm glad so many people got a kick out of it! Here's an alternate version I threw together while playing with fake lomo techniques and textures.

OK you've got my attention...anything you say...I'll do it!!! Great shot. Different and entertaining! I think you could crop about an inch off the right since I don't think that space holds value. Nice color tones. Well done. 8

I really like this shot. I do wish the crop was a bit wider to allow his chest fur all the way in the shot and his tail to be fully seen. But overall an excellent image. Great eye detail, good timing on catching his meow and the color tones work well. Very cool image. Bumping up.

Wow, that's a scarey looking cat! Is this taken down from above it? Good DOF and timing. I'm entered in this and I'm not voting.
