Challenge: Alone In A Crowd (Basic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT
Lens: Canon EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 V USM
Location: Thornhill, Ontario, Canada
Date: Nov 22, 2007
Aperture: f/10.0
ISO: 400
Shutter: .5 second
Galleries: Emotive, Blur
Date Uploaded: Nov 26, 2007

Originally made for a poster promoting a leadership conference my friend is organizing. Someone pointed me in the direction of this website/contest from a different forum though, and seeing as how the original title was "Lost in a crowd", I thought it fit very well. Considering I had to do all of my shooting for this project in one of two hallway rushes (one before first period and one after it) that spanned maybe 5 or 6 minutes total, I'm very happy with the result. The one I ended up using for the poster had the subject post processed at a warmer white balance and the rest of the image in the desaturated colder one, but contest rules are rules so this is the next best thing.

12/05/2007 09:07:15 AM
Perfect for the challenge and a great image, too. Many congratulations on your first ribbon, Noah (with many more to come, I hope).
12/05/2007 08:50:10 AM
This is an absolutely wonderful entry, and both a blessing and a curse for your first shot out of the gate.

Know now that you *can* do this, so take heart, but always keep this in mind *when* you get smacked around by the voters in the future.

For the record, I gave this a 9 'cause I thought this was a spectacular entry!

Good luck in future challenges and welcome to The Coliseum!!!
12/05/2007 08:33:42 AM

12/05/2007 12:12:29 AM

Nicely done! Congrats on the blue!
12/05/2007 12:07:12 AM

Good idea. I saw another that looked much like this. Other than motionless vs blurred motion she does not stand out from the others as much as the other photo and I don't see the hopelessness. She looks like she has a lot going for her.
12/04/2007 09:03:45 PM
Well done and one of my top picks.
12/04/2007 04:41:58 PM
I like this one
12/04/2007 03:44:23 PM
My favorite in the challenge, hope you make it to the top 10 for sure!
12/04/2007 02:20:35 PM
just perfect! Whish it in the Top 3!
12/04/2007 01:08:05 PM
well done - great shot
12/04/2007 11:56:44 AM
Very nice shot. I really like the tonal range here.
12/04/2007 03:22:15 AM
nice hand held shot, I am guess around and 1/8 sec shutter. I may have cropped a little bit off the top, maybe just below the fan.
12/03/2007 11:38:46 AM
This should win - great image.
12/03/2007 10:28:39 AM
Nicely done. Great Idea that is well executed
12/03/2007 09:29:30 AM
I'm surprised this idea wasn't used more for this challenge. Having the subject stand still for a long exposure in the middle of people traffic is my first idea of "alone in a crowd". Tehcnically this is good, although I don't care aesthetically for the blue-steel look.
12/02/2007 09:04:18 PM
This is the technique I was going to use if I had time to enter this challenge. I think the subject would look more alone if she was not looking at the camera. I wonder what it would look like to use this concept looking down on the model (like looking down on her in a mall lobby or an airport from the the next floor above). Nice job. I was hoping to see a picture like yours.
12/02/2007 08:47:23 PM
great job
12/02/2007 02:57:24 PM
looks like a winner to me
12/02/2007 12:54:14 PM
"This photo has been validated."
I wonder why the request for this one to be validated? Very nice long exposure here. And based on what i've seen so far, this should do well! 10
12/02/2007 11:40:10 AM
nice capture, she is a bit soft from her movement however.
12/02/2007 11:34:31 AM
good one.nice effect
12/02/2007 03:08:03 AM
I think this is the winner. :) Terrific pose and expression on her face. Just a great capture of the isolation of the teen years.
12/01/2007 10:21:49 PM
I like it.
12/01/2007 07:37:05 PM
good use of motion blur, well done!
12/01/2007 02:59:16 PM
Finally someone that has a good take on the challenge. This is my exact definition of Alone in a Crowd. Everyone else just didn't get it. This to me does. Well done. Great movement. Love the tone, and composition. 10 from me.
11/30/2007 03:59:21 PM
I predict this will score high - a ribbon in your future!! Beautifully done!
11/30/2007 12:52:24 PM
absolutely fantastic. the eye contact is very captivating. i am sure i will see this one on podium. 10
11/30/2007 09:40:32 AM
great message, great shot... very well conveyed
11/30/2007 03:15:11 AM
I think this image gets its strength from the light--its so cold and harsh and...institutional, and that empasizes the emotion of the girl to great effect.
11/29/2007 10:16:43 PM
I can so relate!
11/29/2007 05:29:07 PM
classic concept, but well executed. like the light and colors and the expresssion. lacks of sharpness distract but probably inherent to mode of shooting.good composition, draws you immediately to subject. 8
11/29/2007 04:25:36 PM
This is really well done. Such a surreal look to it....haunting and evocative. 9
11/29/2007 02:35:19 PM
The people are all blurry!!! - 1

That was a joke, BTW :) Although I wish the main subject was a bit sharper.
11/29/2007 01:19:35 PM
Great job! 8
11/29/2007 10:07:06 AM
Cool image ... I think that you stuck the challenge idea well
11/29/2007 09:37:30 AM
I do hope you ribbon :)
11/29/2007 09:11:36 AM
Great shot for the challenge, and great shot in its own right.
11/29/2007 08:02:17 AM
Really great shot
11/29/2007 06:23:11 AM
Nice use of motion blur to convey the challenge concept. Very apt subject choice, too!
11/29/2007 03:49:05 AM
Why in the middle of the hall?
11/28/2007 11:39:26 PM
A clear winner in my book
11/28/2007 11:37:22 PM
Great shot. Love the shutter drag used here. 10
11/28/2007 09:34:54 PM
Very nice shot!
11/28/2007 08:45:35 PM
I saw another here like this. Love the shot!
11/28/2007 07:27:30 PM
Nice photo, somewhat surreal looking.
11/28/2007 06:05:32 PM
great effect
11/28/2007 05:57:56 PM
I like this shot! Great effect, matches the contest very well. Good work!
11/28/2007 04:32:49 PM
very good...shutter speed was perfect...8
11/28/2007 03:44:01 PM
Definately my favorite!! Great idea and execution!!
11/28/2007 01:38:28 PM
love the effects
11/28/2007 01:28:15 PM
Really portrays the feeling of being alone.
11/28/2007 12:39:27 PM
Very effective use of long exposure.
11/28/2007 11:57:38 AM
This is the kind of shots i was hoping to see with this challenge. Excellent

What a great idea for this challenge!
11/28/2007 11:39:14 AM
Very good, I hope it is basic editing though
11/28/2007 11:23:21 AM
Wow...what a great shot! This type of image is quite common but you've done an exceptional job of portraying your subject being detached from the motion around her. Further, the color is really well done. The florescent lights have no green cast and the image has a cold, sterile cast. Again...well done!

11/28/2007 11:08:17 AM
Great shot! I love her expression, it really feels like she is alone. I like everything about it. 10. This one should be in the top 10 for sure.
11/28/2007 10:56:32 AM
The blueish tone really gives a "Hopelessness" look to the picture. She really looks "invisible" to everyone around her.... Who hasn't had that feeling in highschool?

11/28/2007 10:27:13 AM
I smell a winner. I thought this shot was REALLY good. It's a bit like ones in the past but with a twist. This is really an outstanding shot. Good luck
10
11/28/2007 08:28:31 AM
Very nice, looks like you and someone else had the same idea, but I prefer the more dramatic lighting in your scene
11/28/2007 07:35:53 AM
Nice composition. I'd expect this kind of composition to be appear in this challenge. Nice try.
11/28/2007 07:08:54 AM
very nice and fitting to the theme
11/28/2007 03:04:53 AM
Yes now this is what I had in mind too.
Damn I should have tried harder.
Excellent shot... maybe I'd like to see a little more or her or less. Here its a little bit in the middle.
11/28/2007 01:58:05 AM
perfect for the challenge, love the colors and setting
11/28/2007 12:27:25 AM
thats really cool good job
11/28/2007 12:24:42 AM
I typically don't comment on photos that I'm sure will ribbon only because the photographer probably knows what the did right and don't need me to tell them. But WOW...great shot! You've got some stiff competitions with the studio shots but this should be front page all the way.
