Rowan wakes up one night to find the Real Tooth Fairy at her bedside. Without nearly a startle she rubs her eyes and says 'Hello there. Who are you?'

The Real Tooth Fairy on the other hand was a bit startled. "Uhmm, hey kid. Aren't you supposed to be sleeping?"

Rowan slowly got out of bed and began to remember the stories by her brother and the money that was left under his pillow for his teeth that had fallen out. "You are the Real Tooth Fairy aren't you?"

The Real Tooth Fairy, still a bit unsettled as to be having an actual conversation with a kid (it hasn't happened in many generations) steps back a few and responds. "Uhmm, why yes, I am the Real Tooth Fairy, kid."

"You're kind of fat you know", Rowan quickly retorts. "And smoking is really bad for your health my mommy says."

"Gee. Quite kind of you to point that out kid," the Real Tooth Fairy snidely replies. "How about we just skip the small talk and get down to business. You obviously know why I am here."

"As a matter of fact I do," Rowan says. "And I am so glad I woke up. I have been hoping to have this discussion with you."

"Really?" says the Real Tooth Fairy.

Rowan continues without skipping a beat, "My brother says that he got a quarter for every tooth he left under his pillow. Now that was some years back and I wanted to make sure that your rates have kept up with the times."

"My rates?" asks the Real Tooth Fairy.

"Yes - rates. Inflation you know. I have calculated that the going rate for a fresh tooth should be closer to 39.5 cents, but to make it easier on you why don't we just round up to 50. Then you dont have to carry around a whole bunch of pennies. Just stick with a Kennedy fifty cent piece and your overall labor increase is kept at a minimum. Of course if you really wanted to lighten your load you could just go to a dollar bill. Might be worth it in the long run saving money on health insurance premiums because of a bad back or something from carrying all those coins. Though if you quit smoking you would probably make up the difference right there."

The Real Tooth Fairy stands quiet for a second and contemplates what she has just proposed. After a moment he responds, "Will a fifty cent piece get me out of this room without any more critiques?"

Rowan politely replies "Why yes it would."

"Here you go kid." The Real Tooth Fairy tosses a half dollar coin onto her pillow and quickly makes his escape.

Rowan climbs back into bed, covers herself back up clutching the coin in her hand. As she drifts back to sleep she looks forward to her next encounter with the Real Tooth Fairy - as it will probably be the next night. He forgot the tooth.

To Be Continued...

----------------------------------------------------------

I have been wanting to shoot this for nearly a year now. This character came to mind way back when and I have been just waiting for the right challenge. The only bummer is that it came up at the same time as a SP challenge. I have outtakes that I would love to enter there but two fairy images of me in the same week may be just a bit too much.

The white backdrop we had just recieved on behalf of melethia, (thanks Deb - get back to Germany soon!), the oversized wings I had purchased the day after halloween this year (our other set was too small for good impact), and the tutu is actually mine as Aimee had made it for me many many years ago as a part of our juggling show. I had originally wanted to wear work boots but I couldnt find them. I think the dress shoes are a better touch. The cigar is a swisher sweets (cheapest out there - I prefer a Macanudo).

The first image of this character was initially meant to be a single portrait with no other bodies in the image. But Rowan was hanging out with me as I was doing light tests so we got her all dressed for bed and ready to go. I had to promise her she could watch Dora afterwards - the payemnt has begun. She did real well here.

Lit with our 420 into a silver umbrella camera left and the 580 on camera bouncing off the wall to the right. The tamron was not zoomed at all so I could get all of me and the wings into the shot. Aimee hit the shutter.

PP - Raw conversion, NI, contrast mask, cloning and alot of blur to clean up the backdrop wrinkles, dodging and burning all over the place to help give a cartoony feel, levels layers, desat the background, crop, resize, more blur cleanup, USM, more dodging and burning, border.

Predictions - I really suck at them as of late. I am hoping for a solid standing, 6.5 would be nice. But I also am pretty sure people are sick of seeing me and my family in my entries. Comment count - if the challenge stays under 100 then I see this as being along the lines of my popcorn entry. Possibly 50. It should give people a good laugh. It did us.

I looked up your work and style from the signature challenge. I must say I am impressed with your work and creativity. What a great Dad to put together this amazing and heartfelt image of you and your daughter. I hope it is still hanging in her room. I just love it and wanted to say... What a lucky daughter!

I cannot believe I never commented on this image!! Perhaps I was just overwhelmed by it's genius? Yeah, that's it! God is in the details, Tim, and you sure paid attention to them. What everyone else said, but also the body language between the two. This must be the Mafia tooth fairy...

Tim, you're well on your way to being one of the most faved shots on DPC. Add mine to the pile. :) The great concept and the funny story are wonderful, and the little details (pliers, tattoo, teddy bear, and dress socks pulled all the way up) just add so much to it.

Just think, in 30 years you'll look at your profile page and think "man, i wish I were in that good shape again." *grin*

The more I look at this work of art the funnier it gets. I finally had to forward it to son who has a 6yr old waiting on the tooth fairy with a tooth in a container.

This is just a hoot!!! Reminds me of one of my brothers. Only thing is, he's bald. However, he too tells great stories to kids.

Wonderfully funny shot. Ribbon well earned. But where is the child's respect for his elders? The quarter should have gone to a penny for the remarks. Tsk, tsk. When will kids learn?!

Absolutely too funny. Thank you. It's wonderful how you captured a classical shot of the child in the "Dr. Denton" sleepwear holding the teddy bear by the hand. It's a beautiful picture in it's own right. But to add that to the hilarious tooth fairy character was genius.

The concept is very clever and creative, but the detail in the execution is genius - from the tattoo, the pliers, the teddy bear dangling from her hand - genius! And the story is icing on the cake. Just masterful and wicked funny! A late TEN from me. :D Congrats on what will be a very hard to top personal best!

Everytime I look at this image I just smile. I just now noticed the pliers in your hand. Really, I can't tell you how wonderful this image is, and all the thought that was put into it. It is my favorite in the challenge. I hope to see you ribbon with this. I want to know what you said to your daughter to get her to look like she thought you really were the tooth fairy. This is beyond words. I'm glad this challenge came along - fits perfectly and is just too funny! The tattoo seals the deal. Props to Rowan for not either cracking up or running off in fear! (Comment only.)

one of the funniest shots i have seen in a looooooong while. gotta be on the podium. btw the kid does not look scared at all. that little detail would have made a huge difference too. still a 10 quality pic. good luck.

I tried to make sure I didn't spend too much on this page for fear that this image would get burned into my monitor screen. It's already been burned into my mind. I hate you for that. Oh, I would say something about the lack of environment in which you shot it but that would have only detracted from the sheer absurdity of it all. (no vote)

ROFLMAO!!! That is just too damn cute. The bent pliers are a particularly nice touch, and the tooth tatoo, and the cigar, and the wife-beater shirt (as my son calls them). And the black socks ... really awesome job with the details, and VERY brave model :::giggle::: The contrast with the poor innocent child with her teddy bear is perfect.

Back again after voting all the way through: this is far and away my favorite. Still funny, even at a reasonable hour of the morning!

Thank you timfy. :) Very nice. I like the colour matching with the 2 outfits. There something funny in the editing here, with little spots of blurred outlines. I'm guessing you manually blurred the background, but caught bits of the fg as well. But I think this shot will still do well.
