Post challenge: OMG Yay!

It was real, not a prop. A controlled training burn, but up she went all the same.

Many thanks to Fire Chief Dennison of the Machias Fire Department in Maine, for giving me a heads up. You rock, Joey!

For those interested, shots showing progression from beginning to end are here.

Made the local newspaper, too!

Thanks for all the comments, it's been a fun week. :)

Obviously great photo! Congratulations on your success! (I am curious,...Did you get some of the muted tones in the fire by heavy use of darkening the highlights feature of Shadows/Highlights? I am mostly just curious to see if my eye is still on-target with analysis of greatness.) Truly you have a great eye & post-process skills! :)

Excellent job, Laurie!

01/09/2008 11:33:01 PM
So help me understand Laurie...you dressed in black, coloured your face with black shoe polish, headed out to the woods with your matches and petrol and your Lowepro with the camera and lens, lit the fire on some unsuspecting family's home, and when they ran out you went click, click, click, then ran back into the bushes where you came from. Would that be about right??? AND you made the local papers!!!! It's amazing what crimes people get away with these days!

:)

Well you deserve the ribbon for all that trouble, and the family was insured, right? so they get the new house they always wanted. Well done...everyone wins :)

Wow, Laurie... love the reduced exposure, keeping all that detail in the flames and putting focus right there. The mood this dark image creates is really powerful. Love it.

Nothing at all against Tim's shot, but I would have picked this for first because it is so intense and dramatic. The exposure on the flames just seems perfect to me and it was at just the right time of the evening. Superb! And a huge hug and congrats on that ribbon!!

Beautiful capture, though

Wow, that's pretty intense! Nice capture. I don't like that the flames are cropped out at the top, but I won't count it against you, those flames were probably pretty high!

Gee. You went to a lot of effort to set this photo up. Where did you find your props? Actually, this is a very powerful, intense photo!

01/03/2008 09:00:16 AM
Very dramatic and I'm guessing not staged, which must be the first I've voted on in this challenge so thats nice to see. Could perhaps have pushed the constrast higher still with levels or curves to deepen the blacks as there is hardly any detail there anyway on my display and a building silhouette would have been stunning. The tree in the background is a shame.
