Crossing the Zambiezi River from Botswana to Zambia, December 1997. The ferry is made from pontoons with two giant outboard motors strapped to the sides.

December 3 – Zambia

We crossed the Zambezi by pontoon ferry yesterday. Literally, a pontoon with an engine either side. It was lovely, if somewhat smoky from the engines. We saw two mokoro – dug out canoes – on the Zambezi. The sky was blue, the sun was bright, and they were silhouetted against the water. Lovely.

We also saw two real elephants – not in a game park. We were driving through some forested area in north Botswana, when I saw some off the road amongst the trees. I told J and M. M was lying down in the back, and didn’t believe me at first. Huge and grey. We were all touchingly excited.

Zambia is lovely, lush and green. There are large deciduous trees and lots of green grass. There must be a lot more water here than in Botswana.

Will repeat myself and say what a great choice to go with the saturated colors in this photo set. Beautiful shot.

I recall seeing this one earlier, but I find I really like seeing it in the sequence with the story. I now feel the movement of the ferry based on my view of the previous shot of the river. These all definitely need to be seen together.
