Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Time Lapse (Advanced Editing VI ("Time Lapse")*)
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM for Nikon
Location: Tullamarine Melbourne International Airport
Date: Jan 7, 2008
Aperture: F9
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/320
Galleries: Black and White, Travel
Date Uploaded: Jan 6, 2008

THE IMAGES: Shot this wide at 10mm on a tripod. Initially I tried using burst mode, but then decided to manually shoot each frame in succession for better time and distance between the shots. I would imagine these started at one frame a second and ended at 2 frames a second.

THE EDIT: Basically overlaid each image in PSCS3 and masked the planes from each layer one at a time. Merged all the layers. Grayscale, Duotone, Dodge and Burn, Noise Ninja, USM...not in that order.

PREDICTION: I am hoping I won't get dqed, but if I don't: 6.4564. I checked with SC and they indicated this would be OK, but with all the controversy, it is yet to be seen.

POST: What a thrill to ribbon twice in a week! Thank you everyone for your kind comments and votes. Some of you are starting to pick my style out, so I will have to try some new things. I was on holidays with the family when all of the voting was going on, so I was able to get online on my phone. I was really excited with this particular image and ribbon. Thanks again...Enzo

Hello Enzo,

First I would like to say congrats on the ribbon. I think you have a wonderful image here but I do have some issues. First that sign & lightpole both cockeyed, I can live with the sign but the lightpole is murder. Secondly the first planes nose being abruptly cut off by your border some room was needed to have the feel of flight and direction. I get the feeling of run-up here the first plane stopped planes 2 & 3 just kept coming.

Does this mean to say that priests are allowed to point black tubes at incoming aircraft? Tongue in cheek I be - but I am surprised that they allow people to do such things. Not sure they would here... edit to add that I did like this in voting!

Great tones. I like this. The light-pole in the background hurts this. I also think I'd like the 2nd plane from the front to be left out.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
01/12/2008 05:47:55 AM
good composition and tones. but there is to my taste one plane too many among the closest 3. The last 4 are great, but I would have deleted the 2nd closest.

01/08/2008 11:48:19 AM
a little more separation between the planes would have made this even better.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
01/08/2008 09:47:40 AM
If only the spacing was consistent between the back 4 and front 3. The rest of it is spot on, great B&W conversion, lovely tones, clever signs and title. The lampost is a bit unfortunate, you might have been able to obscure it with the forground sign without effecting the rest of the composition.

Nice idea. Wish the top one wasn't cut off though but still very nice. I'm guessing this might be Simms?

01/07/2008 09:03:30 PM
Very cool! I love the merge right sign as it refers to the planes looking merged as they get closer. Excellent work!

01/07/2008 07:42:13 PM
Nice - I love the moodiness and the sky. The only thing I could say is that I wish the last plane weren't overlapping the second one or cut off by the top of the frame - but it's not like you could sit and reshoot forever. Everything else is perfect.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
01/07/2008 07:15:43 PM
Nice b/w conversion and I like the ominous, industrial feel of the shot. Would look nicer if the planes weren't overlapped.

sweet. shame about the nose being cropped off the final one, but still a great image and use of the technique. Tho i suppose you couldnt hang around too much taking shots on the airport boundaries, hehe.

One of my favourites from this challenge (if it stays legal!) but a wicked photo nonetheless. The perspective is gorgeous and I love the black and white which suits the toning perfectly, dark heavy jumbo against soft white clouds. For the sake of criticism/improvement, it would be nice to have removed the top of that lamppost from the sign if it was physically possible and for the last couple of jumbo frames to have been separated...but I'm guessing you were on a fixed time lapse, so the togetherness of the planes is the plane slowing down for a landing. Ace pic - solid 9 and a fave.

Excellent work and very creative work. If you had skipped the overlapping 2nd airplane and gotten the last shot a little earlier showing whole first airplane I think it would have gone all the way in this challenge.

Nice sequence shot, but I don't understand why the sign and street light are in the shot. IMHO it's a real stretch to associate it with air traffic control. I would move to the right or crop out the left half.
